Philips isn’t sitting out the high-refresh-rate race. Recently, we’ve seen new OLED monitors like the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W and ViewSonic XG273F-2K-OLED push refresh rates up to 720 Hz, albeit only when dropped to 720p. For competitive esports players, that trade-off is often worth it if it means shaving off a few more milliseconds of input lag.
Not to be outdone, Philips has now introduced the Evnia 27M2N5500XD, a 27-inch gaming monitor built around a newly developed 1440p panel capable of a native 500 Hz. It was showcased alongside a similarly-specced monitor from AOC, the Agon AGP277QK, which isn't surprising given that both brands operate under TPV.
As with the AOC model, Philips allows gamers to push the refresh rate all the way to 1,000 Hz by dropping the resolution to 720p. That will naturally have a dampening effect on image quality, which does make you wonder who genuinely needs a 1,000 Hz monitor. That said, you still get the full 500 Hz at 1440p, which should still place it among the fastest displays available today.
Other features of the monitor, as reported by IT Home, include a 1 ms GtG response time and a 2000:1 contrast ratio, which suggests it won’t be using an OLED panel. The monitor will also be factory-calibrated to ΔE < 2 and certified under the VESA DisplayHDR 400 tier. More importantly, Philips is positioning the 27M2N5500XD as part of its higher-end Evnia line, so adaptive sync support and typical gaming features like black equalizer options and crosshair overlays should be on the menu.
