Dell Inspiron 15 3505 in review: Quiet, affordable office laptop
The Dell Inspiron 15 3505 is a simple office laptop that comes in the 15.6-inch form factor. Today's unit is the physically identical sister model of the Inspiron 15 3501, which we have already tested. In this case, our 3505 test device is powered by a Ryzen 5 APU and starts from around 450 USD. Its competitors include devices such as the Acer Extensa 15, HP 255 G7, Fujitsu Lifebook A3510, and the Lenovo Ideapad 3 15ALC6.

Case & Connectivity - No USB-C for the Dell System
Dell uses a slim, matte black chassis with roughened plastic surfaces. There are no deficiencies in terms of the build quality. However, there is room for improvent regarding the rigidity and robustness: The base unit and the lid are overly susceptible to twisting from the corners and the chassis yields under pressure. The battery is fixed. The components are accessible after removing the bottom plate.
Although the Dell system comes with three USB-A ports (2x USB 3.2 gen 1, 1x USB 2.0), there is no USB type-C port. It is possible to connect an external monitor via HDMI. The SD card reader (reference card: AV PRO SD 128 GB V60) is one of the slower models.
Even though the recorded Wi-Fi transfer speeds are more than acceptable under ideal conditions (no other Wi-Fi devices in proximity, low distance between the laptop and server), they are slow compared to more modern solutions. The reason is not hard to identify: The installed Wi-Fi module (Realtek 8821CE) only supports transfer rates of up to 433 Mb/s.

Input Devices - 3505 with Optional Backlit Keyboard
The flat, roughened keys of the non-backlit chiclet keyboard offer shallow travel and a distinct actuation point. While the feedback is decent overall, it could have been slightly more crisp. The keyboard slightly yields while typing - this effect is more pronounced in the center than towards the edges. Overall, Dell has delivered a keyboard that is suitable for day-to-day use.
A multitouch ClickPad (~10.5 x 8 cm / 4.13 x 3.15 in) with a smooth surface and good gliding properties serves as the mouse replacement. It responds to inputs all the way into the corners. The pad offers shallow travel and a distinct actuation point.
Display - IPS Screen
While the contrast (940:1) of the matte 15.6-inch display (1920 x 1080 pixels) is still okay, the brightness (231.4 cd/m²) is too low. We consider values above 1000:1 and 300 cd/m², respectively, good. We did not detect PWM flickering.

The color accuracy of the screen is very good ex-factory with the colors only slightly deviating from their ideal values. This is not visible to the naked eye. We were able to improve the accuracy slightly by calibrating the display. The display does not suffer from a blue tint. The color spaces AdobeRGB (42 %), sRGB (60 %), and DCI-P3 (40 %) are not fully covered.

Performance - Ryzen 5 APU Does not Reach its Full Potential
With the Inspiron 15 3505, Dell has created a 15.6-inch office laptop with enough power for office and web use.
Test Conditions
The manufacturer does not provide the Inspiron with any power profiles or presets. Instead, we used the Windows default profile "maximum performance". The power limits of the CPU are 25 watts (PL1) and 30 watts (PL2).
Processor
The CPU of the Ryzen 5 3450U APU consists of a quad-core processor with a base clock of 2.1 GHz. Via Turbo, it is able to increase its clock speed to up to 3.5 GHz. Simultaneous multithreading (allows once core to process two threads) is also supported.
During Cinebench R15 multi core, the CPU runs at 3 to 3.1 GHz for a short time. The CPU clock subsequently drops to the 2.8-to-2.9-GHz range. The CPU clock during the single thread benchmark sits at 1.5 to 3.5 GHz. In battery mode, the CPU reaches clock speeds of 2.4 to 3.1 GHz (multi thread) and 1.4 to 2.4 GHz (single thread).
We run Cinebench's R15 multi core benchmark in a loop for at least 30 minutes in order to determine whether the CPU turbo is permanently active while on mains. The turbo is only active for 2 to 3 minutes. Afterwards, the CPU runs at speeds close to the base clock.

System Performance
The system is smooth and responsive. We did not encounter any issues. The integrated APU offers sufficient performance for office and web use. The system also produces good PCMark results. The installed DDR4-3200 RAM runs at 2400 MHz ("DDR4-2400"), since the APU does not support higher memory frequencies. Thus, the memory transfer rates fall behind those of comparable laptops such as the Fujitsu Lifebook A3510.
Furthermore, Dell leaves some compute performance on the table due to the RAM only running in single-channel mode. Dual-channel mode can be enabled by installing a secondary memory module.
