Smartphones with the same kind of display as some high-end iPads and TVs are about to be made in a factory in China, according to a new leak. The new kind of screen could confer improved contrast and color-accuracy on the mobile devices, and also provide an alternative to the OLED panels that have come to dominate the industry.

Apple touted the 2021 (or M1) version of the iPad Pro 12.9 as its best tablet yet to consume or even work on high dynamic range (HDR) content thanks to a switch to a Liquid Retina XDR display. We also found the novel screen quite bright and color-accurate (if also susceptible to PWM).

miniLED panels are also often backed to deliver superlative contrast due to the high density of their eponymous tiny light-emitting diodes, particularly when it is used on large-screen devices.

They have never been minimized enough to apply these potential advantages on smartphones, although that might be subject to change soon.

One company in that industry is now believed to conduct a trial run of miniLED smartphone production, which will take place after the ongoing New Year's celebrations in China.

The new tip comes courtesy of Fixed Focus Digital, a Weibo leaks account that typically specializes in the smartphone OEMs Huawei and Honor.

Ironically, the iPad Pro has now moved on to OLED technology, although miniLED remains prominent in TVs such as this 55-inch LG QNED80 model as seen on Amazon.
