Rumours about the iPhone 18 Pro’s Dynamic Island seem to have taken more twists and turns than a roller coaster. A typically well-informed leaker has shared an image of the punch-hole’s alleged final design, indicating a 35% reduction in size compared with the iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple’s Dynamic Island has remained largely unchanged since debuting with the iPhone 14 Pro. Even on the current iPhone 17 Pro, the company has continued using a very wide, pill-shaped cutout to house the front-facing camera as well as the infrared projector and camera required for Face ID’s 3D recognition.

Recently, there were speculations suggesting that Apple might be replacing the pill-shaped cutout with a small round punch-hole in the top-left corner for the iPhone 18 Pro. However, these rumours are likely the result of a translation error. Instead, Apple is apparently planning to integrate a hidden infrared sensor beneath the AMOLED display in the upper-left area. If this proves accurate, the punch-hole could become considerably smaller in future because it would only need to accommodate the selfie camera and infrared projector.

According to a comparison image shared by the leaker yeux1122, this change could reduce the size of the iPhone 18 Pro’s punch-hole by a remarkable 35% compared with the iPhone 17 Pro. The resulting cutout is narrower whilst retaining the same height.

This design frees up a little more active screen space on both sides, potentially allowing developers to display additional information within the Dynamic Island. Users may also benefit from more screen real estate when watching videos or gaming – situations where the punch-hole might detract from the experience. The Apple iPhone 18 series is expected to be officially announced in September, by which point we'll know whether the visualisation is accurate.
