Apple has finally introduced its second-generation AirTag. Arriving almost five years after the launch of its predecessor (curr. $25 on Amazon), the new AirTag promises to surpass Apple's first-generation tracking device in several key areas.
For example, Apple claims to have increased range via a new Bluetooth chip. Unfortunately, the company has not specified to what degree or how many to metres the new AirTag will remain trackable. Similarly, Apple reports that an upgraded ultra-wideband (UWB) improves Precision Finding distances by up to 50% but without elaborating further.
This new UWB chip also opens up Precision Finding to Apple Watch smartwatches from the Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 onwards. Moreover, Apple boasts that its new AirTag contains a 50% louder speaker, too. In real terms, this change is said to make the second-generation AirTag hearable from twice as far away as its predecessor.
Overall, the new AirTag looks visually unchanged from Apple's first-generation release. As a result, the former should be compatible with all of the latter's first and third-party accessories. The new AirTag is available for $29 or $99 as a 4-pack bundle. Please see Apple's website for more details.
