Apple has pushed a new beta update for all Apple TVs released from 2015 onwards. As promised, it has now added improved aspect ratio support, thereby allowing the latest Apple TV 4K and others to run happily on 21:9 external monitors.

Apple announced new features for tvOS earlier this year as part of its tvOS 18 release. While tvOS 18 has been available publicly since mid-September, some of the improvements shown beforehand are set to roll out in future updates. To that end, Apple appears set on adding expanded aspect ratio support within tvOS 18.2.

Please note that the new minor tvOS update remains in beta for the time being, having been presented to developers on Monday. Based on current findings, Apple has improved aspect ratio support to include Automatic, 16:9, 21:9, 2.37:1, 2.39:1, 2.40:1, DCI 4K, and 32:9. Ultimately, 16:9 will likely be the most used format.

With that being said, the new aspect ratios on offer could be handy for those seeking to connect an Apple TV 4K (curr. $149.99 on Amazon) to a projector or an ultra-wide monitor. Currently, the public release of tvOS 18.2 is scheduled for December. As with tvOS 18 itself, the new update will be compatible with Apple TVs released from 2015 onwards.
