Apple MacBook Pro announced with M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max variants
Apple's shiny new M4-powered MacBook Pros are finally official. Like their predecessors, their are available in 14-inch and 16-inch flavours, with no signs of a 13-inch variant which got phased out last year. Along with varying screen sizes, you can pick between three chips: Apple M4, Apple M4 Pro and Apple M4 Max. However, not all chips are available with all SKUs. Following is the list of some of the possible combinations listed on Apple's website:
- 14-inch, Apple M4 (10-core CPU, 10-core GPU), 16-24 GB RAM, 512 GB/1 TB storage, starting at $1,599
- 14-inch, Apple M4 Pro (12-core CPU, 16-core GPU), 24 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, starting at $1,999
- 14-inch, Apple M4 Pro (14-core CPU, 20-core GPU), 24 GB RAM, 1 TB storage, starting at $2,399
- 14-inch, Apple M4 Max (14-core CPU, 32-core GPU), 36 GB RAM, 1 TB storage, starting at $3,199
- 16-inch, Apple M4 Pro (14-core CPU, 20-core GPU), 24/48 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, starting at $2,499
- 16-inch, Apple M4 Max (14-core CPU, 32-core GPU), 36 GB RAM, 1 TB storage, starting at $3,499
- 16-inch, Apple M4 Max (16-core CPU, 40-core GPU), 48 GB RAM, 1 TB storage, starting at $3,999
If you want more memory/storage, Apple lets you crank them all the way up to 128 GB and 8 TB, but only on one 16-inch MacBook Pro variant with the top-spec M4 Max chip. Apple's new 'nano-texture' display shown off alongside the M4 iMac also costs $150 extra. Additionally, the base 14-inch MacBook Pro with an Apple M4 comes with a 70 Watt charger out of the box. A 96 Watt brick will cost you $20 extra. Thankfully, this restriction applies only to one model. On the flip side, all 16-inch MacBook Pro variants (M4 Pro/M4 Max) come with a 140 Watt charger out of the box.
Thunderbolt 5.0 functionality is limited to the two chips, with the base Apple M4 being restricted to Thunderbolt 4.0. Nevertheless, you get a total of three TB4/TB5 ports on each SKU. Other ports include HDMI (8K out), SDXC and MagSafe. For wireless connectivity, there's Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Once again, there's no sign of Wi-Fi 7. The notch is here to stay, unfortunately, and it houses a 12 MP 'Center Stage' camera. You can pre-order both MacBook Pro models on Apple's website now, with general sales commencing on November 8.
