Apple analyst describes when to expect 2 nm processors, tandem OLED displays and design overhaul for MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16
Apple has not even started shipping the new Mac products that it unveiled last week. Nonetheless, Mark Gurman has already moved onto the prospect of what the company has in store for future MacBook Pro machines as far out as 2026. For context, Apple updated the 24-inch iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 at the end of October with new M4 Pro and M4 Max chipsets.
Of those, only the Mac mini (curr. $799 - 512 GB on Amazon) received a full redesign. Typically, Apple has freshened up the looks of the MacBook Pro every four years. Most recently though, the company decided to wait an additional year to unveil its current designs, which coincided with the introduction of accompanying Apple M1 generation chipsets.
According to Gurman, Apple will wait a comparable amount of time again before bringing new designs to its MacBook Pro range. However, this is only said to be true because of production delays associated with rumoured tandem OLED panels, which Apple had hoped to have ready by next year. Thus, next year's MacBook Pro releases will only bring M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max chipsets to the table.
By contrast, their successors should combine a new design with tandem OLED displays for the first time. On top of that, Gurman reports that Apple M6 generation chipsets will adopt a 2 nm manufacturing process, down from 3 nm for the M4 and M5 series. As a result, the MacBook Pros that Apple releases in 2026 should be considerably more efficient than current models while also offering a healthy boost in performance and peak display brightness.
