Apple trials new blood sugar monitoring features in secret app
Apple has been testing new blood glucose monitoring features in secret. Two tools have been tested via an app, allowing users to monitor their food consumption and log changes in their blood glucose levels, measured using traditional devices. Apple Watch users can already keep an eye on their blood sugar levels when using gadgets like the new Dexcom G7 CGM.
This new Apple app is said to have been designed to help people with prediabetes, those with higher than usual blood sugar levels who may develop Type 2 diabetes. By tracking these two data points, users can understand how different foods affect their blood sugar levels. A report from Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg suggests that Apple has been testing the app this year, though testing has now concluded. A select group of Apple employees were given access to the tools following a blood test to confirm their prediabetic status.
It appears that Apple is not planning to release this app to the public; this was purely a research exercise, with the company hoping to gather inspiration for future user tools. Whether or not a meal logging tool could be on the way to the Apple Health app off the back of this testing is unclear. There also seems to be no link between this study and the non-invasive blood sugar tracking device that Apple is developing.
