Less than a year has passed since AYANEO released the AIR 1S, a 5.5-inch gaming handheld that it sold exclusively with an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U APU. Now, the company has announced what it describes as an AIR 1S with an 'upgraded chip'. In truth, the new model is unlikely to outperform by a tangible margin.
As AYANEO's promotional images show, it plans to offer the AIR 1S with the Ryzen 7 8840U, the Hawk Point successor to the Ryzen 7 7840U. However, the former only outperforms the latter by 5% in our benchmarks. Ultimately, this should not come as a surprise. Specifically, AMD equips the Ryzen 7 8840U with the same Zen 4 CPU cores as the Ryzen 7 7840U.
Not only that, but the Ryzen 7 8840U also matches its predecessor by delivering 3.3 GHz base and 5.1 GHz boost clock speeds across its 8 CPU cores. Likewise, it retains its Radeon 780M iGPU, which still peaks at 2.7 GHz. Ultimately, the changes that AMD has made between the Ryzen 7 7840U and Ryzen 7 8840U should not impact the latter's gaming performance.
As far as we can tell, AYANEO has not made any other hardware changes for its AIR 1S refresh. Instead, it will offer the new device in Eiyuden Chronicle livery, which was unavailable on the original AIR 1S. Unfortunately, the company will limit this 505 Games collaboration to 30 units worldwide. Alternatively, the new AIR 1S will be available in its predecessor's Aurora White and Polar Black colour options. It remains to be seen when AYANEO will actually deliver this new AIR 1S, though.
