Like a lot of larger laptops, the Series 7 Chronos is an awkward trade-off between power and portability. At £1,100 the Series 7 is an expensive laptop that is not portable or powerful enough. It didn't perform as well as the Novatech nSpire 2760, which is faster and cheaper at around £800, although that laptop is even heavier, has a lower resolution screen and a smaller hard disk.

At a shade under a grand, the 700Z is well worth a look. If you’re after a decent-looking, lightweight 15-incher, the next best place to looks is the likes of Apple’s 15in MacBook Pro, for which you’ll pay nearly £600 more, and which comes with less RAM and a smaller hard disk. Aside from the over-ambitious trackpad, there’s an awful lot to like here.

Attack on the gaming elite. Alienware and Asus have to watch out: Samsung presents a serious opponent for the gaming leaders, M17x and G74SX, called 700G7A. In addition to high-end components (Radeon HD 6970M) and good equipment (Blu-Ray drive), the 17 inch laptop has an illuminated keyboard. So, nothing can go wrong, or?

It's a hefty machine able to handle the most-demanding games and media applications, but where it really excels in its display. Samsung makes great LCD panels, and 700G showcases their quality, with a clear, bright display and with the power needed to deliver the media performance that will show off the display. 3D is the cherry on the top.

The powerful, quiet and well-equipped Samsung Series 7 NP700G7A is an excellent laptop for gamers. However, we recommend you only use the 3D mode for watching 3D Blu-ray movies and stick to gaming in 2D with the graphics detail up high. While the AlienWare M17x-R3 is still a cut above, it's also a fair bit more expensive than this Samsung model.

Gaming notebooks are generally not cheap, with most models starting well above S$3000. For top of the line units, with similar specs and entertainment capabilities, expect to pay up to S$5000+. Bearing that in mind, we were pleasantly surprised to see Samsung price the 700G7A at a very modest S$2899. Best of all, you’re not sacrificing performance at that price.

Great battery life, WiMAX and WiDi 2.0 wireless features, and a powerful CPU and GPU tag team are what make the Samsung NP700Z5B-W01UB a great laptop. The Samsung Series 7 Chronos is a great notebook that offers a lot of the kinds of thing I tend to harp on about, such as a big screen, a full keyboard, USB 3.0 ports and a multi-touch trackpad. With so many competitively priced notebooks around, you might baulk at paying close to a grand for a product that is not particularly thin or light, but it looks well designed, is well thought-out and well built. It is also extremely comfortable to use – and surely this is the critical buying factor for a general-purpose notebook.

With the Series 7 Chronos, Samsung has turned its talents to making a commoditised version of the Apple MacBook Pro. It has much of the same technology inside, and borrows heavily in certain design cues, but using cheaper materials to allow a lower price. Where the entry-level 15in MacBook Pro costs a handsome £1549, the Samsung can be had for £900. The screen is in some ways better (unless you specifically order an anti-glare for the Mac, at an extra £120) although build quality and ease of use trail some way behind the MacBook.

Samsung's Series 7 Chronos is a good, but not great laptop. It's got lengthy battery life and provides quite the hardware punch for a reasonable, if not bargain price. Samsung’s sleek, metal-clad 15.6in Chronos laptop is the most impressive MacBook Pro rival we’ve yet seen, offering a lighter machine with better specs for nearly half the price, even if it’s not quite as attractive or well-built. The Samsung Series 7 (NP700Z5A-S03) ($1,299 list) laptop combines an elegantly slim (under one inch thick) aluminum case with slot-loading DVD±RW drive; sunny 15.6-inch screen and backlit keyboard; quad-core Intel Core i7 power; 8GB of RAM; and a roomy 750GB hard drive yoked to a small solid-state drive or 8GB of cache storage to boost boot and application loading times—all in a package about as light as desktop replacements get, 5.2 pounds.

When it’s time to shop for a new laptop, everybody wants an ultrabook. But few remain quite so excited when they see the often-limited performance and inflated price tags. Is the Chronos a truly premium notebook? On the one hand it has a great screen, low weight and an admirable set of hardware. On the other hand, the touchpad positioning and considerable use of plastic take a lot of the shine off. There’s stiff competition in the premium notebook market segment and while the Chronos makes a valiant effort, it’s just not quite there yet.

However, if what you need is a powerful system for home that you can put away at the end of the day, or a portable gaming and entertainment centre, this has got everything going for it, even the price. The Samsung Series 7 Chronos offers plenty of power and value. For $1,100 you get the same specs as the 15" MacBook Pro with Apple's resolution upgrade for nearly half the price. In fact, we prefer the Chronos' keyboard backlighting and Windows optimized software (for those of you who are looking for Windows rather than Mac OS X). The Samsung is a bit lighter than the competitors and it's quite thin and highly portable. Battery life is very good, the fan is quiet and the keyboard is top notch once you get used to the offset design. But the TN panel, though bright and matte, just doesn't hold a candle to the MacBook Pro, Dell XPS 15z with the 1080p WLED option or the late 2011 HP Envy 15 with its IPS display. Viewing angles, particularly top-bottom are poor and contrast can't match these competitors.

With record-breaking speed, a superb display and excellent keyboard, the Samsung Series 7 Gamer is one of the best gaming laptops to hit our labs. Games ran smoothly even at their highest settings and videos and Web pages looked spectacular on the full HD display. And let's not forget the Gamer's impressive audio. The only drawback that prevents this notebook from being an Editors' Choice pick is the heat it generates. But if it's raw power and a gorgeous screen you're after, the Samsung Series 7 Gamer is a compelling choice.

The Samsung brand is one of the most important brands of South Korea. Samsung is an international notebook manufacturer of medium size according market shares and reviews.
Intel HD Graphics (Sandy Bridge): Processor graphics card which is integrated in the Sandy Bridge Pentium and Celeron processors. Similar to the desktop HD Graphics 2000 and not related to the old Arrandale processor graphics with the same name.
AMD Radeon HD 6750M:
Essentially a renamed Radeon HD 6650M but with faster GDDR5 memory.
AMD Radeon HD 6970M:
High-end graphics card from AMD based on the desktop HD 6850 with UVD3 video processing and Eyefinity+.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M:
An upcoming high-end graphics card for large notebooks expected to launch with Ivy Bridge processors in the first half of 2012

Intel Core i5:
2430M: Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.4 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.7-3 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
2450M: Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.5 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.8-3.1 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1300 MHz Turbo).
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2670QM: Fast Quad-core processor clocked at 2.2-3.1 GHz based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2675QM: Fast Quad-core processor clocked at 2.2-3.1 GHz based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
3610QM:
An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.3 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1100 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
13.3: This is a common display format for subnotebooks. Netbooks, UMPC and some subnotebooks have tinier displays. Nevertheless, the majority of standard laptops has a higher format. The advantage of a small display is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.
14.0: 14 inch display size is a mixture between the small formats of subnotebooks and the 15 inch standard display. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
17.3: Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.95 kg:
These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 12 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
4.1 kg:
This laptop is heavy below average, compared with the average of notebooks. Therefore especially desktop replacements fit in this class of weight.
83.91%: This rating is to be considered as average, because the amount of notebooks with better ratings is about equal like the amount with worse ratings.
