This near 7-inch titan is certainly one of the biggest phones around, boasting a crisp QHD AMOLED screen and beefy stereo speakers. Samsung has knocked it out of the park in terms of battery life, software updates, AI features, the camera, and the hardware. The only thing that might be holding you back is the $100 price increase of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Which does sting a bit, and honestly, if you have a Galaxy S23 Ultra or Galaxy S22 Ultra, I wouldn’t recommend upgrading right away. For one, the S23 Ultra is getting the AI features anyway. Other than that, there’s not much change year-over-year. But if you’re coming from a Galaxy S20 or S21, you’ll see a huge change here.

With a DXOMARK Audio score of 139, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra performed very well in our tests, and was very little changed from the S23 Ultra’s audio performance. The built-in speakers delivered good overall sound quality with a nice timbre and a deep and powerful bass, making the Samsung a great option for listening to music, watching movies or gaming alike. Recording results were best with the main camera, but the S24 Ultra also did a decent job with the selfie camera. Recordings with the memo app were limited by the default memo setting. Overall, the built-in microphones delivered good results. The audio zoom feature was capable of reducing background noise and focusing on the main subject. Wind noise reduction worked effectively as well.

A refreshed design does not make a true upgrade. New features, new technology, and lifestyle-enhancing alternations do, and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has all of this along with seemingly every other feature or specification bump you could want from a new phone. Not only is it worth buying if you don’t already own a Galaxy Ultra phone, but I’d even say it’s worth buying if you have a Galaxy S23 Ultra, provided you can make peace with the price increase. It’s really that good. Obviously, you don’t need to upgrade your Galaxy S23 Ultra (it’s still excellent), but it’s heartening to discover Samsung hasn’t just sent out a vague refresh of its most expensive non-folding phone this year, which is really what it did with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 over the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The Galaxy AI stuff is being pushed hard, and while some of it is worth your time, it’s not a reason to choose the Galaxy S24 Ultra on its own.

There are other phones that can deliver the same processor to you at a lower price. The Pixel 8 Pro can even boast of matching the S24 Ultra’s cameras and has some smarts of its own. Still, the combination of a big display, big cameras, S-Pen, and seamless connectivity with external displays is pretty difficult, if not impossible, to match. The Galaxy S24 Ultra can work as a small tablet, a scribble pad, a full-on digital camera, a transcriber, a video editor, a transcriber and translator, and even as a PC when connected to a display. And it wears all of these hats with equal ease. Yes, it is big and has a big price tag to match, but then this is the Big Boss of Android.

Anyone using a Galaxy S23 Ultra right now shouldn't bother upgrading. The new anti-glare filter is incredible, and I hope to see it on more Samsung phones in the future, but S23 Ultra owners can at least partly replicate the effect with an anti-glare screen protector for the time being. The upgraded PWM rate on the S24 Ultra is a massive deal for the future and makes it possible for some flicker-sensitive folks to use a Samsung phone — something that hasn't been possible for a long time. You may be okay without it if the Galaxy S23 Ultra's screen doesn't give you eye aches or headaches. But there's something to be said about Samsung's value here, despite the price. A $1,300 starting price is hard to stomach, but it's also the first time Samsung has promised to keep the phone updated and relevant for seven years.

However, compared to its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra lost 12 points due to the weaker showing in autonomy and charging. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has a 5000 mAh battery, offering 56 hours of autonomy under moderate usage. The device performed impressively in individual test cases, especially when streaming videos, gaming, and idling with the screen on. However, the autonomy declined during our typical usage scenario and on-the-go tests, indicating that the device was not very well optimized. The charging experience of Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra ranked slightly over the average among all our tested devices but still came behind the S23 Ultra (Snapdragon).

There are few other smartphones on the market that cost as much – including the iPhone 15 Pro Max, OnePlus Open and Samsung’s own Galaxy Z Fold 5 – and if you’re not into foldable mobiles, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the only real alternative where you get to pay this much. In general, we miss better AI integration with apps other than Samsung’s own, and Danish language support would also be nice. Unlike past years, where the chipset was consistent across three models, this year’s Galaxy S24 series only sees the Galaxy S24 Ultra getting Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for its chipset. As it stands, the Galaxy S24+ cannot become a true “no stylus” alternative for the Galaxy S24 series, since it’s not the same processor (Exynos 2400). As far as we can tell during our trials, all three models are equally quick at handling Galaxy AI-related tasks. If your only concern is the number of milliseconds it needs to edit your photos or translate your calls, the three phones are all viable choices. Unfortunately, a hands-on session also meant that we didn’t get to see benchmarks, so we can’t tell you if the performance differences between Exynos or Snapdragon chipsets are apparent in other areas (like bootup, gaming, etc.).

Oh, and given the sky-high price of the Galaxy S24 Ultra with 1TB of storage, it might be worth looking at a foldable Android phone as a better use of your money. Both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 ($1799.99 at Samsung) and OnePlus Open ($1499.99 at OnePlus) are excellent options, with the former offering many of the same software features as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. It won’t receive as many updates, nor does it have the same slate of AI features, but it lets you customize the internal and external displays independently — something most foldable phones ignore. The OnePlus Open is one of those foldables, but it makes up for the limitation with a much more usable cover display and lighter overall construction. Should you choose to venture outside of Android altogether, Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max ($1199 at Amazon) is the one iPhone worth considering. It’s the only device to outpace the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in our Geekbench 6 scores, and Apple’s top-tier flagship remains the camera to beat when it comes to shooting smartphone video.

Stripped bare of its AI promise, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra comes across as an incremental upgrade as compared to its predecessor — a flagship with a flat screen and an upgraded chip. And speaking of AI features, it’s not as if those are the exclusive domain of the S24 Ultra. Its own siblings, the Galaxy S24+ and the S24 offer the same features and might come across as better value for money, depending upon what you’re looking for. The Google Pixel 8 Pro (review) also offers quite a few AI features and in some cases actually works better than the Galaxy. S24 Ultra. Apart from the Pixel 8 Pro, other phones in contention include the likes of the Vivo X100 Pro (review) and the OnePlus 12 (review). However, the Galaxy S24 Ultra still stands out as the most accomplished if all its features and capabilities are taken into consideration. Of course, it still has to contend with the venerable iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The short answer is no, not really, unless you really like new toys like me and can get a good trade-in deal with the cashback/discount incentives on top, but before doing that, consider that a lot of the One UI 6.1 additions, including some AI features, should be coming to the S23 series as well later this year. This might even include camera improvements, so it might be worth holding onto those S23 Ultras a bit longer. The only downside here is that the S23 series promised four years of updates, with a year already gone, that leaves three more Android versions to go, whilst the S24 will see a further four beyond that point. For me, the upgrade came with a saving of nearly £950 after accounting for all the discounts and selling the free bundled Galaxy Watch6, and trading in my S23 Ultra to a third party for a higher figure than what Samsung was offering. The new camera improvements, screen performance, and seven years of updates sold it for me.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is an exceptionally good, but boring phone. The return of a flat display is welcome, but the design is dated and lacks inspiration. Granted, most people put a case on their phone, hiding the design. The camera takes perfectly acceptable photos, but it does tend to overexpose some areas, so just be mindful of that. And the new AI features are convenient -- useful, even -- but not a big enough reason to upgrade to the S24 Ultra, especially if you have an older Galaxy device that will get them via an update. Performance, display and battery life are the S24 Ultra's killer features, and as is usually the case for Samsung's flagship phone, other phone makers are going to have their work cut out for them in 2024 if they want to compete with Samsung. The S24 Ultra sure looks like it's the Android phone to beat this year.

Great question. The obvious answer is business people with a decent chunk of disposable income and a need for productivity apps and devices (but not to the level of the Galaxy Z Fold range). In my opinion, it’s the best of what Android phones are currently capable of. Yes, there are some significant drawbacks resulting from some of the generative AI features, but you can also just not use them. For people upgrading, if you have an S22 Ultra or newer, you don’t need this phone. People with an S23 Ultra basically already have most of what makes this phone great. The S23 Ultra was basically the S22 Ultra. If you have a Note phone and want to upgrade to something like the Note, then this is the phone to buy.

Despite the discrepancy, the Galaxy S24+ still has a respectable standing. More than that, the Galaxy S24+ even beats out the Galaxy S24 Ultra by a bit in the battery endurance test, around 19 minutes, to be exact. Considering that the Galaxy S24+ starts at just S$1,528 versus the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s S$1,928 while still retaining those AI-powered features like Generative Edit and Circle to Search, it definitely looks like a strong option.

Would I advise you to buy the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra? Yes! Admittedly, it's very similar to last year's Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, the extended 7-year upgrade policy alone makes this model more relevant in terms of long-term sustainability. Photo quality is once again top-notch as the new 5x telephoto lens is a judicious choice, if a little too pragmatic for my preference as it removed some of the magic from this iconic Samsung device. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC's performance and 5,000 mAh battery life are excellent. In short, there are plenty of good reasons to spend almost my entire month's salary on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. However, the Galaxy AI features are definitely not one of them. I don't understand why Samsung placed so much emphasis on this aspect of its smartphone. I feel like we've fallen into one of those gimmicks that trend the latest buzzwords such as NFT phones or crypto phones.

Some of the best parts of the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus aren’t entirely original to Samsung, and I think that’s fine. Adopting a well-liked, functional design and leaning on Google for AI is just smart — why reinvent the little black rectangle? As far as big Android phones go, you really can’t do better than the Galaxy S24 Plus right now in terms of performance and value. Sure, you can go Ultra and get the absolute most phone, with a big, fantastic screen, better zoom, and a built-in S Pen. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra delivered a decent performance in the DXOMARK Camera tests and was a slight overall improvement over its predecessor S23 Ultra, helped by a 200MP image sensor in the main camera, a range of new AI features, and the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Our testers particularly liked the Samsung’s portrait shots in bright light, which offered vivid and natural color that in some shots felt even more realistic than on the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. It’s difficult to tell to which degree the AI exactly contributes to image quality, but it certainly appears that the new AI tools and Samsung’s existing imaging technologies have helped to greatly improve the rendering of some images. The S24 Ultra ultra-wide camera did very well in bright light, and at the other end of the zoom spectrum, the addition of two tele modules contributed to good detail and overall image quality across a wide range of tele zoom scenes.

There is no question that Samsung and Qualcomm have absolutely hit it out of the park with this generation when it comes to performance and battery life, I'm still doing some specific camera and Galaxy AI testing before I give a final ruling on the phone. The price increase certainly isn't a welcome change when the phone looks largely the same on the outside, but the changes actually run deep on this phone with the anti-glare display, the built-in AI features, and the massive improvements to the performance and battery life. The cameras remain my biggest question and regrettably we've been dealing with abysmal weather here that hasn't lent itself to some of the test photos I need. The loss of the 10x optical zoom stings, but what I have been able to capture so far doesn't suggest that it is the downgrade some believe it to be.

At this point, you'd be forgiven for being fed up with companies trying to push AI into everything. But if you just think about these as software upgrades meant to make your phone more useful, Samsung’s push into machine learning makes a lot more sense. The S23U was already a great phone and on the S24 Ultra, we’re getting the same (though somewhat plain) design, but with a tougher titanium frame, a much faster chip, a brighter display and even longer battery life. Samsung also tweaked its main telephoto lens to provide a more useful focal length but without a major decrease in reach or quality. But the big thing is that, with its Galaxy AI suite, Samsung finally has an answer to the sophisticated features that were previously only available from the Pixel family. Sure, the S24’s tools aren’t quite as polished as Google’s offerings, but they get you 80 to 90 percent of the way there.

But I always prefer real life testing, so I've spent a few days playing with these Samsung phones. The Exynos 2400 holds up well compared with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, so don't discount it. That Galaxy S24 Plus can blaze through Genshin Impact and other stress tests with only very occasional, minor stumbles.

New features, new technology, and lifestyle-enhancing alternations do, and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has all of this along with seemingly every other feature or specification bump you could want from a new phone. Not only is it worth buying if you don’t already own a Galaxy Ultra phone, I’d even say it’s worth buying if you have a Galaxy S23 Ultra. It’s really that good. Obviously, you don’t need to upgrade your Galaxy S23 Ultra (it’s still excellent), but it’s heartening to discover Samsung hasn’t just sent out a vague refresh of its most expensive non-folding phone this year, which is really what it did with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 over the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The Galaxy AI stuff is being pushed hard, and while some of it is worth your time, it’s not a reason to choose the Galaxy S24 Ultra on its own. It’s a combination of all its parts — from the amazing battery life to the genuinely improved camera — that makes it a must-buy.

Time for conclusion and overall thoughts – I do think that in terms of hardware, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is an iterative upgrade. There are two big changes – the first one is the screen, which I think is a huge upgrade because of its antireflection properties and also using a flat screen. The second change is the change from a 10x telephoto to a 5x telephoto camera. Depending on how you use your phone to take pictures, this may or may not be a good change. Personally, I think 5x is better as it’s a more proper amount of zoom to take pictures of the dogs. 10x zoom makes me feel like I’m a National Geographic photographer. And the price – it’s expensive for sure, but there are still people that are going to buy it no matter what. Samsung will perpetually have discounts and such, so if you think the price is right, go get it.

Samsung's newest S Pen-toting beast has just been unveiled at the January Unpacked event! That's exactly 11 months after the announcement of the Galaxy S23 series — it seems Samsung has been growing too eager to launch its flagships before the typical 12 month cycle is up. Well, what are we getting? New processor — sure —, some design facelifts — definitely, with a titanium frame to keep up with the times. A bit of a camera module shuffle has the zoom cameras changed up a bit, but we still end up with 4 cameras on the back, like before. And, we now get to see the Galaxy S24 Ultra go completely flat-screened. There's just the ever so slight arch at the edge of it, so it fuses into the frame seamlessly. Samsung has been reducing the edge curve over the past few years. If you are still a fan of it, it looks like the Galaxy S23 Ultra may be your last chance to get a phone with an Edge screen for a while. The good news is that we do expect Samsung to keep selling the S23 Ultra as a "reduced cost model" over the next year.

Is the Samsung S24 Ultra a worthy upgrade, and worth that £1249 UK price? I've been using this mega-Galaxy phone for almost a week and so far I'm a big fan. For one, the camera has improved over last year's model, so the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra offers more natural results with Scene Optimiser switched off. That's on top of the improved zoom between 5-10x, which now boasts upgraded clarity and tone. Then there's the battery life, which is again superb - and ever so slightly better on the Samsung S24 Ultra vs the S23 from 2023. Sadly those charging speeds haven't improved. Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is more powerful, but this doesn't always translate to better performance.

At the latest Galaxy Unpacked 2024 show, Samsung unveiled their latest generation Galaxy S24 series that are their first ever phones to feature their signature new Galaxy AI spearheaded by their top of the line Galaxy S24 Ultra which is not only larger than its smaller siblings the baseline Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ but also has the most powerful rear camera setup of the lot along with a host of other upgrades including its signature S Pen stylus to make it the most powerful phone out of the Galaxy S24 series but also puts it in the running as potentially one of the best Android phones of 2024. We managed to get our hands on a sample fresh from its latest local launch where they announced its prices and preorder specials for the Malaysia market. Here’s our Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra first look and unboxing where we pop open a factory fresh sample of the phone and see what’s in the box while sharing our first impressions of their titular titanium titan.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is a true flagship smartphone that has everything you can want in a smartphone. It can go toe to toe with the likes of the iPhone 15 Pro Max but also beats its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, even in camera performance. However, it’s a big win. It is an upgrade and the comparison pictures will tell the same tale but it is not that big of an upgrade and hard to see at first glance. We only came across two things that can be considered as a con. The first is the lack of a curved screen, which will surely disappoint a set of users. The second con is the lack of a 10x periscopic camera. This year we only get a 5x periscopic camera but there’s barely any noticeable difference between the two. So, if you are rocking an older Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy Note 10, or any other older smartphone, this upgrade will be worth it. This experience can be further enhanced with Galaxy AI, which will surely get a lot more features in the coming months.

This hands-on review runs through the Samsung S24 Ultra specs and shows how this £1249 beast stacks up to the Galaxy S24 Plus and mini 2024 smartphone. For one, you get upgraded camera hardware, including a 200MP primary shooter and 50MP periscope zoom. However, the other phones can now capture 8K video at 30FPS and they have the same ultra-wide and selfie setup. The other big difference is the chipset - in the UK, that Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the S24 and Plus are Exynos 2400. Stick around for more on the differences! The Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus now boasts a QHD screen just like the Ultra model, and it's only a mite smaller. However, the S24 Ultra does upgrade that Victus 2 screen coating to Gorilla Glass Armor, which is anti-reflective as well as scratch resistant. It's quite obvious that Galaxy AI is doing the heavy lifting this year, with most of the hardware improvements and software features heavily relying on the on-device AI algorithms. For yet another year, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is the center of attention with the new telephoto camera, titanium side frame, and flat frontal design. However, the changes in the Galaxy S24 and S24+ are more than welcome. The slight bump in the battery capacity and the upgrade to brighter LTPO OLED panels are significant upgrades. In fact, the Galaxy S24+, with its higher resolution LTPO panel and 4,900 mAh battery, put it much closer to the S24 Ultra than ever before. We are curious to see how this plays out because some may prefer the S24+ over the Ultra due to their similar feature set and big price gap. What's more, we are eager to see how the new AI-driven features aid real-life situations and whether Samsung's heavy bet on AI instead of offering more meaningful hardware upgrades is enough to boost sales and spark users' interest.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra hands-on: Adding a pinch of AI spice to the formula

While these changes are welcome, they don’t fundamentally change the Galaxy experience from years gone by. If you’ve used a recent Galaxy flagship, you’ll know what these devices feel like to use, for better or worse. Likewise, One UI 6.1 is an incremental upgrade over the One UI 6 software currently running on the Galaxy S23 series, and with years of updates left, recent models still feel very current. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra offers a bit more new hardware, mostly in the camera department. Still, we’ll have to spend more time with it to determine whether the upgrades are worth the extra cash. This circles us back to Galaxy AI as the key reason to have your eye on the new Galaxy S24 series. I’d hesitate to call the new features as revolutionary as Samsung claims. However, the company has earmarked some useful AI utilities and implemented them very well for a first-generation attempt.

Despite some early reservations, I was left with an overall positive first impression following my brief time with the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Aside from the new titanium frame, flat display and the inclusion of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, there’s not a lot else in terms of upgrades, but Galaxy AI takes up the slack. I’m certainly looking forward to fully testing all the new features it has to offer when I receive a handset for review. Don’t be fooled into thinking you need to spend this much on the 24 Ultra, however. Most of these features can also be found on the cheaper models as well, and at a starting price of £1,249, you might want to reconsider your S24 Ultra purchase and perhaps pick up one of those instead. If not, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is available to preorder from today (17 January) and launches in the UK on 31 January.

Though it may look similar to its predecessor, a number of meaningful changes keep the Galaxy S24 Ultra an interesting option for 2024. That’s not only because of the regular features – great cameras, top-end performance and, of course, the S Pen – but because of the now AI-supercharged apps and a new long-term OS upgrade commitment. While I’m not yet ready to deliver my final verdict, Samsung could be on to a winner with the Galaxy S24 Ultra – it just depends on how well the AI tools hold up in everyday use.
