Huawei's foldable smartphones have gone Nova today (August 5, 2024) - which means their latest iteration is overtly pitched at a younger crowd of consumers. To that end, the OEM has livestreamed its debut on bilibili in partnership with Yi Yang Qianxi of idol group TFBOYS fame.
Regardless, the Nova Flip is a cutting-edge foldable in its design, being (marginally) thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 at 6.88 millimeters (mm) high when open. Then again, its cover display is smaller (and much more square than usual) at 2.14 inches in diagonal length.
The new Flip's version of HarmonyOS 4.2 allows it to do things like show clock widgets (which can be heavily customized with things including one's own photos), display the inevitable cute virtual pets and act as a selfie preview for the rear cameras.
They consist of seemingly useful 50MP main (albeit without the ability to fit Nova 12 Ultra-esque variable aperture technology in) and an 8MP ultrawide-angle lenses, equipped with AI features such as the Huawei equivalent of Magic Eraser.
Similarly, the Nova Flip's main screen is rated for features such as AI HDR and 1-120Hz LTPO Super Motion. However, Huawei is being coy (again) about the "octa-core" chip that drives those screens - it's not even clear whether the Flip is 5G or not.
Then again, it will be one of the fastest-charging clamshell foldables around with 66W Huawei SuperCharge - albeit for a 4,400mAh battery.
That alone is an upgrade on the Pocket S, however - for a relatively reduced starting price, even.
The Huawei Nova Flip is now available to order on Vmall for 5,288 yuan (~$743) with 256GB of internal storage; 5,688 yuan (~$799) with 512GB and 6,488 yuan (~$911) to max it out with 1TB: SKUs that all come with 12GB of RAM according to famous leaker Digital Chat Station.
Then again, its better-established rival the Motorola Razr 2024 is $699.99 on Amazon right now.
