Gamers just learned the pre-order costs of the Ghost of Yotei Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Collector's Edition. Fans in most countries weren't surprised, except for Brazilian buyers. While the PlayStation Blog previously announced that the Standard Edition would be R$349,90, the price is now R$399,90. Converted from Brazilian real, the new price equates to 70 US dollars. That prompts concerns that PS5 games could become costlier in other regions.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is another unreleased first-party PS5 game that's now more expensive. Sony may be removing regional pricing and leveling costs between countries. Still, that's not much comfort for Brazilian gamers. The average monthly income in the nation is significantly lower than in the US or many EU countries. The rising prices of PS5 titles make gaming less accessible to a population of over 211 million.
So far, Brazil has avoided the recent PS5 price increase on consoles experienced in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. On the other hand, PlayStation Plus subscriptions cost more across Latin America. After Xbox raised the MSRP for its consoles and first-party games, Sony may have a similar response in more countries.
Some stores in Brazil are offering coupons for the physical version of Ghost of Yotei. However, as digital gaming becomes more commonplace, discs are becoming rarer. For now, Brazilian gamers may have to deal hunt or wait for second-hand copies of the Ghost of Tsushima sequel to appear.
The prospect of $80 games is becoming a reality across the globe. Nintendo already set a precedent with the $80 Mario Kart World. Microsoft soon announced that its first-party titles would become as costly. PS5 games and consoles may not remain exempt from tariffs and the changing economic tides for long.
