Zepp Health has launched a chess game for some of its smartwatches. The company claims it is a world first for this kind of device, given the low RAM and power. A blog post written by a software architect at Zepp Health describes how the game had been built.
The post also explained that development had started after the Zepp team realised it had accidentally used a chess piece on the packaging of the Bip 5 smartwatch, intended to market the available mini-games, though Chess was not included. The game was written from scratch with built-in AI for users to compete against. The company notes that it is relatively basic, making it easier for users to win.
The Mini Chess game is set on a 4x5 board with reduced pieces, including a knight, a rook, a bishop and the king. Features include autosave and continue, a loading indicator, a stats window and ‘Win’, ‘Draw’ and ‘Lose’ screens at the end of the game. The Mini Chess app is available for various models, including the recently released Amazfit Bip 5 Unity (complete list below). The blog post does not explain how users can access the app; presumably, it will be available to download from the App Store found in the Zepp app.
