Xiaomi has updated its speaker series with a cheaper option to the Sound 2 Max it launched at the end of last year. A more substantial speaker than Xiaomi's portable efforts like the Sound Outdoor (curr. $49.99 on Amazon), the Sound 2 Max featured a pair of 4-inch woofers aided by a mid-range driver and a dedicated tweeter for up to 101 dB per speaker.
In comparison, the new Sound 2 Pro drops to single mid-woofer and tweeter drivers apiece with 40 W dedicated to the former and 20 W to the latter. As a result, the Sound 2 Pro cannot match the Sound 2 Max for maximum volume, with a 96.3 dB peak mentioned on Xiaomi's website. Also, frequency response varies between 53 Hz and 21.7 kHz rather than 47 Hz and 22 kHz for the Sound 2 Max. Still, up to four Sound 2 Pro units can be paired simultaneously, unlike Apple's HomePod speakers.
Physical controls return, as do RCA and USB Type-C connections for analog and digital audio signals, respectively. Moreover, the Sound 2 Pro offers Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 6 connectivity but a proprietary transmission standard via its Sound Wireless Audio Connector accessory. Currently, the Sound 2 Pro retails for CNY 1,399 (~$201) for a CNY 600 (~$86) saving on the Sound 2 Max. Xiaomi has not mentioned anything about an international launch yet, though.
