IDC India has released its report on the wearables market in this country for the last quarter of 2019 (4Q2019). It reveals that the 'audio' category of these electronics had the highest share for that period, overtaking band-type devices compared to 4Q2018. Xiaomi had the greatest share in the latter sector, whereas Apple's AirPods clearly dominated their own sub-segment.

The IDC India Wearables Tracker for 4Q2019 showed that 5.1 million units from this category shipped in the country for that quarter. Of these, devices of the wrist-band form factor accounted for 1.5 million, or 30.9% more compared to 4Q2018. Approximately 49% of this sector was reportedly claimed by the OEM Xiaomi.

Similarly, 0.933 million smartwatches shipped in the time-frame studied, representing a 77.5% year-on-year (YoY) increase. Fossil was the market leader in this sector, followed by Apple and Huami. However, it was the year of "earwear" (a definition encompassing smart earphones and headphones) in India.

This sector was found to grow by a total of 443.6% throughout the year, allowing it to overtake wrist-worn devices to take the top spot in this market's rankings. It was led by the domestic firm BoAt Lifestyle, with a share of 27.3% for the whole of 2019. However, when it came to TWS earbuds specifically, AirPods were decidedly the most popular, with a share of 43.1%.
