Xiaomi has introduced REM sleep tracking on its Mi Fit app, enabling the feature for the newly released Mi Band 5. The global model, called the Mi Smart Band 5, is expected to launch next month with NFC and non-NFC variants.

Xiaomi has updated the Mi Fit app ahead of the global release of the Mi Smart Band 5. Called the Mi Band 5 in China, the fitness tracker includes a 1.1-inch AMOLED panel, 512 MB of RAM and 16 MB of storage. The Mi Fit app now supports REM sleep tracking, which Xiaomi claims is one of the seven major upgrades that the Mi Band 5 has over its predecessor. Xiaomi has not enabled REM sleep tracking for its other fitness trackers.

The Mi Band 5 also supports magnetic charging, along with the ability to monitor your heart rate. The fitness tracker can also monitor menstrual cycles and supports eleven exercise modes. Underpinning the Mi Band 5 is a 125 mAh battery.

The Mi Fit app is available to download on Android and iOS. Xiaomi brought REM sleep tracking support to the app on June 15, 2020, via an update, but the company has already superseded this build with another. Released yesterday, Xiaomi claims that v4.2.1 fixes several bugs and improves the overall "user experience".
