The Xiaomi Mi Band 5 was officially announced on June 11 and will go on sale on June 18, with the global variant, known as the Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 5, scheduled for release sometime in July. However, it is possible that Xiaomi hasn’t finished with the Mi Band 5 yet, and that there are future editions of the wearable activity tracker in development.
Mi Wear code-scouring results by a developer known as “MagicalUnicorn” and posted on GeekDoing have given up the words “Kongming”, “Kongming L”, “Kongming Pro,” and “Kongming Lite”. Two codenames were already known for the Xiaomi Mi Band 5: “Kongming” apparently related to the Chinese variant with NFC and “York” was linked to the Global model without NFC.
While “Kongming L” could refer to a regional variant of the Xiaomi Mi Band 5, for the moment the prospect of a “Lite” variant and a “Pro” edition are much more interesting. The Mi Band 5 is already brimming with features, so it’s easy to see where a few could be cut to create a Xiaomi Mi Band 5 Lite, but the mind boggles at what could be added to create a Xiaomi Mi Band 5 Pro model.
Perhaps a Mi Band 5 Pro could follow a similar design language as the faked photos that appeared online a while ago that showed the Xiaomi fitness tracker with a full screen (narrow bezels) and what was either a large capacitive button or a camera in the middle of the display. However, for the moment these are just codenames found in an application that might not lead to anything in the long run. Either way, it appears the Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will support the Mi Fit and Mi Wear apps.
