Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro final stable MIUI 12 update released globally; however, Xiaomi confirms that it's end of the road for Xiaomi Mi 6 owners
We know that the MediaTek Helio G90T-powered Redmi Note 8 Pro is already part of the MIUI 12 Phase 2 beta testing program. Xiaomi had also previously confirmed that the update would make its way to the Indian variant of the Redmi Note 8 Pro soon. Now, we get to see that the update has started rolling out globally.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro's official stable MIUI 12 update bears the software version v12.0.2.0 QGGMIXM and is fairly light at just around 600 MB via OTA. According to a Xiaomi Device Team representative, this version is currently rolling out to those who have earlier participated in the MIUI 12 Global Stable Beta testing program and other devices are slated to get it by this month. It is generally advisable to wait for the official OTA update to land on your device but if you do not wish to wait any longer, the update can be grabbed from here directly (2 GB download).
In related news, Xiaomi's 2017 flagship, the Mi 6, will not be getting an update to either MIUI 12 or Android 10. This was confirmed by a Mi Community moderator to a user's query. Interestingly, the Mi 6 was part of the initial MIUI 12 beta testing in China but has now been left out. The last update that the Mi 6 received was MIUI 11 based on Android 9. This development is not surprising considering that the Mi 6 is a three-year old phone and OEMs usually provide only two or three feature updates during the device's lifecycle.
So, while there is no info about further Android security updates for the Mi 6, it is confirmed that it won't be hopping onto the MIUI 12 bandwagon — unless of course, there's a custom ROM developed for it.
