Xiaomi has some serious competition around the world. Phones such as the freshly announced OnePlus 8 Pro, as well as recent flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S20, LG V60, Huawei P40 Pro, Oppo Find X2, and others are legit contenders with the Mi 10 Pro. Right now, the Mi 10 Pro is retailing for about $1,099 (€999, £879) from online retailers. That puts it directly in line with the cost of its direct competitors. So which do you choose? If you want something more mainstream, stick to the Samsung or the LG. They’re available at carrier stores and big box retailers and are the safe purchase. The Oppo Find X2 and OnePlus 8 Pro are incredibly similar, and are perhaps the best devices to put head-to-head against the Xiaomi. For those living in China, the Xiaomi is probably on equal footing with the Huawei P40 Pro. Most of these phones go spec-for-spec with one another and often the only thing separating them is perhaps camera quality and battery life. You can’t go wrong with any of these devices.

On top of that, Xiaomi added something that's impossible to notice on a spec sheet: the experience of using this phone is incredibly good, day in and day out, on a regular basis. The performance and the software (with its optimizations but also with its animations and vibrations) conspire to give you the phone to beat in terms of how subjectively good it feels to use.

Overall, is the Mi 10 Pro worth it? It depends on the price, there’s no bad products, just bad prices. At the launch MSRPs of 999€ the 10 Pro I think certainly wouldn’t be worth the price as there’s other better alternatives out there such as the OnePlus 8 Pro. Currently the Mi 10 Pro however does go for around 760€ which is something a lot more reasonable and represents quite a fair price for the phone, with its cameras really being the only big weakness. Another issue seems to be limited availability, as this variant of the phone just isn’t as easily found as the regular Mi 10.

All that said, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro is a wonderful phone that covers all the bases and then some. Xiaomi did a great job designing a classy piece of hardware that looks as good as it feels. The 90Hz display is outstanding, the nearly two-day battery life is ridiculous, and the speedy processor performance is palpable. Loud stereo speakers and an IR blaster ensure that you’re always entertained. One niggle might be the software, and particularly the lack of an app drawer. The 108MP camera system is very, very good, though perhaps just short of excellent.

Xiaomi is quite well known for its Redmi and Mi series of smartphones. While Redmi covers the budget smartphones, Mi devices are premium and flagship phones. With the latest Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, the company has included almost everything that one could want in a modern flagship. This device has many design traits similar to Xiaomi’s earlier release, the Mi Note 10. The display is curved but definitely not to the same degree as many top-end phones out there. Overall, the smartphone is easily reachable with single-hand usage, despite having dimensions which are not exactly those of a compact phone. As far as the display is concerned, the Mi 10 Pro has been equipped with a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen with a 1080 x 2340 resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The screen itself is indeed quite good-looking, especially with the contrast ratio and color accuracy offered by the phone.

In terms of its performance, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 chipset, which is one of the most premium processors available on Android phones at the time of the phone’s release. The Snapdragon 865’s multi-core performance at the default level is about 30 percent higher than that of the 855-chipset used in the Samsung Galaxy S10+; it even nearly matched the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra’s multi-core benchmark scores. Therefore, it should be able to perform similarly as the S20 Ultra with demanding tasks like gaming and video editing.

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro comes with either 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM paired with either 256 GB or 512 GB of storage. This device also supports 5G, which is again another great feature of the smartphone. As far as the battery is concerned, the Mi 10 Pro has been equipped with a large 4,500mAh battery that feels well optimized for dealing with the fairly demanding screen technologies, but it does drain when gaming and watching content. The 50W fast charging is definitely quick, as it gets the phone’s battery to 27 percent higher in only 10 minutes. There is also 30W wireless charging and 5W reverse wireless charging.

In terms of its cameras, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro has a quad-camera setup that includes a 108-megapixel main snapper, a 20-megapixel wide-angle camera, an 8-megapixel telephoto, which caters for 5x optical zoom, along with a 12-megapixel portrait camera with 2x optical zoom. The main camera delivers really bold shots with good contrast and accurate-looking colors. However, the camera is a little slow to focus compared to main cameras on other flagship devices. The ultra-wide camera also captures rather decent pictures with little to no distortion on the sides. Apart from the rear cameras, there is a 20-megapixel selfie camera in the front that produces rather decent selfies. In portrait mode, it accurately blurs the background and highlights the right parts on the face, making the camera exceptionally good.

Qualcomm Adreno 650: Graphics chip for smartphones and tablets that is integrated within the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. Qualcomm claims that it is 25% faster than the Adreno 640 in the Snapdragon 855 SoC and offers 50% more compute units (ALUs). For Android it should be one of the fastest graphics cards in 2020.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

SD 865: High-end SoC for smartphones that was introduced in late 2019 and manufactured in 7 nm at TSMC (improved N7P). Integrates one “Prime Core” based on a ARM Cortex-A77 architecture clocked at up to 2.84 GHz. Three more performance cores are also based on the A77 but clock up to 2.42 GHz. Furthermore, four energy saving cores are integrated that are based on the ARM Cortex-A55 architecture and clock at up to 1.8 GHz. In addition to the processor cores, the SoC integrates a WiFi 6 modem (including 60 GHz mmWave support), a Hexagon 698 DSP (up to 15 TOPS) and a Spectra 480 ISP. The integrated memory controller now supports faster LPDDR5 memory with up to 2,750 MHz. It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
