At its imaging festival in China, Vivo made initial promises about the camera system of the Vivo X200 series, which will be unveiled in 2024 and is also expected in Europe in the form of the Vivo X200 Pro. Anyone who currently has a Vivo X100 Pro or Vivo X90 Pro should soon benefit from a new feature of the Vivo X100 Ultra.

Vivo has not yet publicly announced the name of the X100 successor, but various teasers on its official Weibo profile are already talking about the next generation of flagship cameras, specifically the sensor technology that will replace the Sony IMX989 in the Vivo X100 Pro and the Lytia 900 in the X100 Ultra. Leakers recently provided early indications that the 200 MP ISOCELL HP9 sensor behind the telephoto of the X100 Ultra 2025 will also be found in the Vivo X200 Pro; as a compromise, the main camera is likely to do without a 1-inch format sensor in the future and instead receive a slightly smaller image sensor, which will probably be around 1/1.3 inches in size.

The (machine-translated) teaser poster below points to a self-developed Vivo sensor based on the 22nm process, which should support even better HDR technology called True-TCG HDR, which is likely to result not only in improved photo previews but also better HDR video recordings. There is also talk of an in-house development called VCS 3.0, although Vivo has not yet explained these technologies. Furthermore, large AI models with one billion parameters will apparently be used to help with AI-supported image optimization.

AI is intended to further improve portrait shots, better brighten scenes with background light or make night shots more realistic. It can be assumed that Vivo will soon introduce all these image processing technologies as the Vivo V4 ISP. Furthermore, the flagship Vivo X100 Ultra and its 200 MP telephoto, which is currently only sold in China, has also received some new camera features, such as B/W mode (as an alternative to the Vivid and Textured modes) as well as Humanistic Street Photography mode.

New sensor based on Sony or Samsung?

Vivo has promised that this special camera mode will soon be available on older Vivo flagships, specifically the Vivo X100 Pro at the end of August, the Vivo X100 at the beginning of September and the Vivo X90 Pro+ and Vivo X90 Pro, X90s and X90 Pro at the end of October and the beginning of November. It should be noted, however, that these dates apply to the Chinese models. It is unclear when or whether the global Funtouch OS models will benefit from this.

Meanwhile, there is currently a lot of speculation about who will actually develop the new sensor in the Vivo X200 series. It is unlikely that Vivo has developed it completely independently. In the past, Vivo has adapted Samsung sensors, for example. A Weibo poster (see below) claims to have learned that the Vivo X200 will have a 200 MP 1/1.28 inch Samsung S5KHP with a very wide-angle 21 mm equivalent focal length and F/1.67 aperture. We do not yet know whether this information is correct, as another leaker disputes this information, expecting a Sony sensor instead.

Just one day later, further clues emerged that point to a Sony sensor. At the very least, a recent Weibo post (see below) from the usually very reliable leaker Digital Chat Station suggests a 1/1.28-inch 22nm Sony sensor with 50 MP, combined with an F/1.57 lens.
