Vivo has announced its latest, third-generation custom-designed ISP for the next generation of its premium smartphones. The V3 chip is touted to bring "4K Cinematic Portrait Video" to Android devices for the first time. The X100 and its higher-end siblings may be the first handsets to debut with this new co-processor.

Vivo is one of a select club of Android OEMs that has successfully developed its own co-processor for its higher-end smartphones. It has introduced the latest instalment in its V series of these chips as part of its own Movie Festival, currently underway in China until July 31, 2023.

The V3 has been hailed as a milestone as it is the first of its line to be based on a 6 nanometer (nm) architecture. This, apparently, gives it the power to support an apparently ground-breaking 4K Cinematic Portrait Video feature on the smartphones in which it is to be integrated.

They may also be capable of post-processing for these cutting-edge clips thanks to their extra silicon, and may also benefit from the "significantly" improved use of image algorithms while using less power compared to predecessors such as the V2.

Given Vivo's record of the last few years, the first of these will be the X100, a putative new vanilla variant of a camera-centric series that may be accompanied by an X100 Pro and even a Pro Plus on its launch.

They might be able to expect cutting-edge main SoCs such as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or Dimensity 9300 to go with their V3 ISPs, to have Zeiss-branded rear camera glass, and to be here by the end of 2023.
