A recently released piece of software on Steam, though not a traditional game, has quickly become so popular that it now ranks among the top entries on both Steam and SteamDB.

Desktop Mate is not a game but a platform for desktop mascots. It brings anime characters to life as dynamic desktop companions that move freely, perch on windows, jump between them or interact with the mouse, creating a lively and interactive background.

The free version of the software, available in English and Japanese, includes only the official character Aiel-tan, an anime girl created by developer Infinite Loop. However, for around $20, users can purchase a paid DLC to add Hatsune Miku, the renowned virtual singer from the Japanese Vocaloid software, a program designed for creating synthetic vocals, to their desktop.

While Desktop Mate doesn’t offer any practical functionality, it allows PC users to add a playful touch to their workspace, a feature that has been warmly received on Steam. Since its release on January 8, the software has over 800 reviews, 89% of which are positive. It currently holds the top spot in Steam’s "Trending Free" charts and leads the "Trending Games" ranking on SteamDB.
