The Witcher 3 Remastered will give Xbox owners a free Windows copy on September 29 via Xbox Play Anywhere

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that owners of The Witcher 3 on Xbox will receive a free PC copy through Xbox Play Anywhere. A recent post from CDPR Japan added details about the feature, confirming on September 21 that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered will support Xbox Play Anywhere when it launches on September 29, 2026. This means Xbox Series X|S owners who already own the game can claim the Windows PC version at no additional cost.

On the official CD Projekt Red Japan account on X, the company stated:

“Notice:

In conjunction with the release of the "Remastered Update" for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on September 29, the Xbox version will support "Xbox Play Anywhere." As a result, customers who own The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Xbox will be able to receive the PC version at no additional cost through the Microsoft Store.

The PC version provided through the Microsoft Store in Japan will be the CERO Z version, marking the first application of a CERO rating to any of our PC titles. However, this will not affect the PC versions currently available on other platforms, such as Steam. We sincerely appreciate your continued support for our products.”

However, one interesting addition to the CDPR Japan post is the mention of the CERO Z rating, the country’s 18-and-over classification. This marks the first time the studio has applied the rating to a PC title. The post explicitly states that the rating will not apply to the Steam, GOG, or Epic Games Store versions of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered.

How does this work?

Xbox Play Anywhere grants gamers a cross-buy entitlement when they purchase an Xbox Store listing. If a gamer’s account owns the Xbox version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered, the PC license will be granted automatically, with save data syncing through Xbox Live.

Xbox Wire confirmed Xbox Play Anywhere on August 25, when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered was announced at Gamescom. However, CDPR did not mention the feature then.

After The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered was revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live, Xbox Wire published a post stating:

“And Remastered also supports Xbox Play Anywhere! Enjoy seamless play across your Xbox Series S|X, PC, or any Xbox-supported handheld, and carry on your upgraded adventure without missing a beat.”

CDPR has also announced free upgrades for existing customers on multiple platforms, including GOG, Epic Games, Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. However, the studio and publisher's original post did not mention Xbox Play Anywhere.
