The Last of Us Part II Remastered can now be played chronologically

The Last of Us Part II was released in June 2020 and the remaster came out in January 2024 for the PS5. Then, in April this year, The Last of Us Part II Remastered hit PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. While the story for the game progresses non-linearly, Naught Dog has released a new update that allows players to experience Ellie’s journey in a chronological manner, hoping to attract new players and bring back those who have already finished the game.

As announced on the PlayStation Blog, the free update for The Last of Us Part II Remastered now allows PS5 and PC players to choose the Chronological mode to start the game. The team at Naughty Dog believes that this mode will give players an even deeper insight into Part II’s narrative. “Players will be able to see how Ellie being gifted a guitar flows so neatly into her learning to play, for example, while the journey through Seattle will showcase the fascinating parallels between Ellie and Abby’s crisscrossing journeys. You’ll see just how close they come into running into each other, how their actions impact each other, and more,” says Editorial Content Manager Jonathon Dornbush.

For first time players, it is still recommended to play the game as originally intended, but the option to play in Chronological mode is still available. The developers have once again worked with Nixxes to bring this experience to PC. There are new trophies to unlock when playing in Chronological mode as well as two new skins that can be used in the No Return survival mode.

The PS5 update comes in the form of Patch 2.1.0 and the PC update comes via Patch 1.5. There are also some bug fixes and performance improvements included in the update.
