While PlayStation 5 owners are eagerly awaiting a native Last of Us Part II PS5 sequel release, Sony decided to fill in the gap with an HBO TV series franchise that just premiered over the weekend. HBO's Last of Us pilot, starring Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) was met with critical acclaim. The survival horror series takes place two decades post a civilizational apocalypse and fans are in for the heart-stopping journey of our heros Joel and Ellie across an infested US wasteland turned into a quarantine zone.
There is barely a PlayStation user that hasn't heard about the game, but for those HBO subscribers who would eventually be coming to the postapocalyptic universe from the new TV series, Sony has prepared a surprise. It takes the form of a free Sony PlayStation 5 Last of Us gameplay that is meant to be an introduction to the horrifying yet life-affirming story of Joel and Ellie. The free trial is quite long, at full two hours, and can get those with fast PS5 controller trigger fingers rather immersed in the game.
Sony, however, has limited the free Last of Us Part I title gaming session to its PlayStation Plus service subscribers. Thus, fans of the TV series who haven't encountered the game before, would have the chance to immerse in this and other PS5 titles by signing up for the PlayStation Premium tier at US$19.45 a month. If only Last of US has caught their attention, though, they'd be better off buying the game for US$69.99 and play it in parallel to the TV series, while they wait for Naughty Dog's Last of Us 2 or even Last of Us 3 release.
