The times when buyers had to be waitlisted for a PlayStation 5 gaming console and had to resort to scalpers or be forced to buy needless junk together with it by various retailers are officially over, declared Sony's Jim Ryan, the president of its Interactive Entertainment division. The wait times should be almost non-existent now as the PS5 supply chain has improved dramatically, he added, and all retailers which carry the console would be able to have stock on much wider inventory levels than before.
In December, Sony sold its largest number of PlayStation 5 units ever and its overall sales since launch are now 30 million. That's about the same number of sales the PlayStation 4 racked up for a comparable timeframe after its release in 2013, despite all the PS5 component supply challenges.
"PS5 supply improved towards the end of last year," tipped Ryan during Sony's CES 2023 expo keynote, and added that "everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward."
It remains to be seen how his promise will hold up in reality, as, despite the record PlayStation 5 December sales, when various retailers used it as doorbuster bait with whatever limited amount of consoles they had, the inventory trackers still show limited current availability. Amazon is still waitlisting PS5 buyers with its invitation request system, while out of the big retail chains, PlayStation 5 consoles are listed in stock only at Walmart at the moment.
