Comments from the editorial team

Many notebooks listed on Amazon feature different hardware configurations. There is a lot of choice in terms of the CPU, GPU and storage capacity. We have only reviewed a small selection of all these different hardware variants, which is why our results are not a 100% match when it comes to other hardware configurations. Anyhow, we mostly focus on differences in performance in this article.

First Place - Microsoft Surface Laptop (2017, Core m3)

Microsoft Surface Laptop with Alcantara wristrest
Microsoft Surface Laptop with Alcantara wristrest

On Amazon, the Microsoft Surface Laptop starts at 699 Euros (~$791) . However, at this price, it only comes with Intel’s Core m3-7Y30. In our review, we had the 980-Euro (~$1109) version with Intel’s Core i5-7200U. The advantage of the m3 chip: With a TDP of only 4.5 watts, the processor can be cooled passively, by this we mean that the device can work without a fan and therefore offers silent operation. On the flip side, the actively cooled i5-7200U provides about 50% more performance in CPU-demanding applications. All other components in both models are the same (i.e., the display, the speakers, storage capacity (128 GB), amount of RAM (4 GB) etc.). We would also like to note that the SSD capacity is quite small even for an office laptop, which means that users are going to run out of storage space pretty fast. A 256 GB SSD is also available, but only for the Core i5 model. In this configuration, it costs 1100 Euros (~$1244).

The Microsoft Surface Laptop comes with a first-rate display and a compact, attractive case. Thanks to good battery life, the notebook proves more impressive in terms of mobility than performance.

The Surface Laptop with the configuration listed on Amazon is intended as an ultra-mobile travel device that is powerful enough for work in web-based applications and communication. With the Core i5 or Core i7 CPU, the Surface Laptop will not turn into a performance notebook; this was proven in our extensive review of the Core i5 model. Whether you should get a Core m3 or Core i5 variant depends primarily on whether or not you need that 256 GB SSD. However, the Surface Laptop is especially attractive with the Core m3 CPU.

Second Place - Microsoft Surface Pro (2017, Core i5)

Tablet with notebook traits: Microsoft Surface Pro (2017)
Tablet with notebook traits: Microsoft Surface Pro (2017)

The Microsoft Surface Pro from 2017 also makes it onto Amazon’s best-seller list, in the configuration with the Core i5 CPU. We have reviewed a very similar model, which had a different amount of storage space; while our review device had a 256 GB SSD, Amazon’s best-seller comes with a 128 GB SSD. The Surface Pro is a device from the tablet/convertible department. All of the system components are integrated into the screen unit, which is why the Surface Pro can be used as a stand-alone tablet. The Surface Pro can be turned into an ultra-mobile laptop with the help of Microsoft’s type cover. However, while ordering you should make sure that the type cover is included as part of the package. This is the case with the offer from Amazon. Amazon lists several configurations, some of which are already sold out. Amazon asks for 899 Euros (~$1017) for the Core i5, 128 GB variant. The Core m3 version is marginally cheaper, while the Core i7 CPU and the 256 GB SSD cost somewhat more.

If you need an ultra-mobile device with a touchscreen, then the Surface Pro from Microsoft is a very exciting offer, especially when it is offered as part of a package. Having said that, the Surface Pro is not a high-performance device.

In our review, the Surface Pro with the Core i5 CPU managed to impress with its great battery life. The built-in Core i5 CPU is passively cooled, which is why it can maintain its full performance under load only for a short period of time. Under continuous load, the Core i7 version is 50% faster than the m3 model. However, the Core i7-based Surface Pro comes with an active cooler and has worse battery life.

The Surface Pro is suited for users who are looking for an ultra-mobile device with a touchscreen. A touch-enabled display is especially useful for web-browsing. If you need a device for typing, then you should know that the type cover for the Surface Pro needs an even, flat surface to be usable, unlike a traditional laptop, which can be used on your lap.

Third Place - Acer Swift 1 SF113-31 (N3450, 64 GB)

Laptop for the price-conscious: Acer Swift 1
Laptop for the price-conscious: Acer Swift 1

The incredibly cheap (£349/$394) and compact (13-inch) Acer Swift 1 makes the cut once again. However, a look at the specifications immediately reveals a number of shortcomings. It comes with a very weak Intel Celeron N3450, offers only 64 GB of internal eMMC storage and runs the cut-down version of Windows (10 S). In our review, we actually featured the Swift 1 with Intel’s Pentium N4200 and a 256 GB SSD. Right now, this version costs 549 Euros (~$621) on Amazon. It also comes with a Full HD screen.

Despite its low price and silent operation, the Swift 1 fails to impress in its best-selling configuration. There are interesting upgrade options, but they significantly increase the price.

In the lowest-priced configuration, the Acer Swift 1 is hard to recommend. Above all, the slow and insufficient eMMC storage proves as a bottleneck. There is not a lot of difference between the N3450 and the N4200. Both chips deliver similar performance in the realm of low-end CPUs.

The hardware version from Amazon’s best-seller list is primarily intended for the educational sector. Windows 10 S does not allow users to install any local programs (with the exception of apps from the Microsoft Store), which is why the puny amount of storage space is not such a big problem. This configuration is not suitable for anything more than simple Internet browsing. The updated version of the Acer Swift 1 with the noticeably faster N5000 CPU, 256 GB of SSD storage and a Full HD display should be a bit more exciting for potential customers. Currently, it costs 599 Euros (~$677) on Amazon.

Fourth Place - Lenovo Yoga 530 (Core i5)

Lenovo Yoga 530: Notebook with the functionality of a tablet
Lenovo Yoga 530: Notebook with the functionality of a tablet

The Lenovo Yoga 530 makes an appearance on Amazon’s best-seller list once again. The convertible comes with the well-known 360-degree hinges, which allow the display lid of an otherwise normal notebook to be completely flipped, making the laptop usable as a tablet. The hardware configuration on Amazon’s best-seller list corresponds to the hardware configuration of the Yoga 530 that we reviewed not so long ago. It comes with Intel’s Core i5-8250U quad-core CPU, 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. The current price is 699 Euros (~$791).

The Yoga 530 from Lenovo is not perfect, but it offers a good price for a good hardware package. The 360-degree display allows the notebook to be used as a semi-mobile tablet, thanks to the inclusion of a touchscreen.

In our review, the Yoga 530 proved itself as a laptop with a good price-to-performance ratio. The Yoga 530 distinguishes itself through its high-quality input devices and its good display. The performance is also quite good. However, because the Yoga 530 does not feature a dedicated graphics card, it is destined for office use. The display of the Yoga 530 measures 14 inches diagonally and has relatively slim bezels. This makes the laptop a good fit for mobile use. Having said that, average battery life of about 6 to 7 hours while Internet-browsing puts a damper on the overall mobility of the device.

Fifth Place - HP 17 (E2-9000e, 500 GB, HD+)

Low-priced notebook with upgrade potential: HP 17
Low-priced notebook with upgrade potential: HP 17

The HP 17 is HP’s main budget offering. It can be found in many various hardware configurations on Amazon’s best-seller list. The HP 17 manages to hold onto its place on Amazon’s best-seller list with roughly the same configuration, which features the AMD E2 CPU, a 500 GB HDD and an HD+ display. Price: 279 Euros (~$315) without the operating system. Granted, there is not a cheaper notebook on the market. However, in turn, users will have to forgo many things.

Price-wise, the large HP 17 finds its place at the lowest-end of the PC market. However, with a few right upgrades, it represents quite a good package. Users who want to get the cheapest configuration should pay attention to what corners are being cut with such a device.

The somewhat aged AMD chip is significantly slower than entry-level offerings from Intel (Celeron, Pentium) and is not suitable for any demanding applications. Even simple web-browsing makes this CPU sweat. Because the notebook comes without a preinstalled operating system, using Linux is a reasonable option. However, this is not a very attractive proposition for the average person. We recommend spending a bit more to get the version with the Ryzen 5 processor that we actually reviewed. The configuration with the 2500U processor, Vega 8 graphics, 256 GB of SSD storage and a Full HD display offers enough power for both office and multimedia use. In practice, it is as powerful, if not more so, as Intel’s 8th-gen CPUs. The good display of this configuration is also a big plus, especially for those who spend hours on end in front of a screen.

Sixth Place - HP 15 (E2-9000e, 500 GB, HD)

HP 15: A lot is possible, depending on the budget
HP 15: A lot is possible, depending on the budget

The somewhat compact 15-inch HP 15 is another laptop from HP that has appeared in many different configurations on Amazon’s best-seller list. The most popular version is among the cheapest ones with an AMD E2 CPU, a 500 GB HDD and a simple HD display. Amazon sells this configuration for 277 Euros (~$313) (Windows 10 included). Here the following holds true: The built-in CPU is one of the slowest notebook processors on the market and should only be selected by users who are well aware of its limitations and can live with very poor performance and a poor display. The conventional HDD, which is used as the system drive, also seems obsolete.

The HP 15 can be configured as either an office laptop or an ultra-budget notebook. However, if you go with the latter, then you will have to make quite a few sacrifices.

The HP 15 model that we reviewed came with much more powerful hardware and a Full HD display. The hardware configuration with Intel’s Core i5-8250U, Nvidia’s MX110, and a 256 GB SSD managed to achieve very good results in our review. Several flaws found in the base configuration carry over to this configuration as well, but it still represents a capable office notebook. Currently, Amazon does not offer our configuration. However, those who are interested can take a look at a model with AMD’s Ryzen 3 2200U, a 256 GB SSD, the Radeon 530 GPU and a Full HD display that costs 549 Euros (~$621). The Ryzen 3 is not on the same level as the Core i5 CPUs, but it still provides a better user experience than the cheapest configuration with the E2 CPU.

Pricecompare

Seventh Place - HP 14 (Ryzen 5, Vega 8, Full HD)

HP 14: Mobile office laptop
HP 14: Mobile office laptop

Currently, the HP 14 is the most compact representative of the cheapest product line that HP offers. The configuration on Amazon’s best-seller list comes with the AMD Ryzen 5 CPU and costs 570 Euros (~$645). As the name suggests, what we have here is a notebook with a 14-inch screen. There are many different hardware configurations of the HP 14, starting with the Intel Celeron N4000 CPU (price 269 Euros/$304) and ending with the Intel Core i7-8550U, which costs about 700 Euros (~$792).

The strengths and weaknesses of the HP 14 lie in its various configurations. Options range from the simplest entry-level notebook to a powerful office laptop.

Performance varies greatly depending on the hardware configuration. While the version with the Celeron CPU, a small 64 GB SSD and an HD display is only suited for the most basic tasks, the HP 14 can also be configured as a powerful and well-priced office notebook. The Amazon variant with the Ryzen 5 processor is especially interesting, because this CPU can easily complete with Intel’s Core i5 offerings. It also features a powerful integrated GPU in the form of Vega 8 graphics and comes with a good combination of storage devices; 128 GB SSD for good system performance and a 1 TB HDD for storing large chunks of data. The Full HD display in this model is preferable to the HD display in other configurations, which failed to impress us in our review of the version based on the Intel Core i5-8250U.

Pricecompare

Eighth Place - HP Pavilion x360 14 (8130U, Full HD)

Versatile: HP Pavilion x360 14
Versatile: HP Pavilion x360 14

The HP Pavilion x360 is a 14-inch convertible notebook that has managed to make it again onto Amazon’s best-seller list, thanks in large part to its price of 599 Euros (~$677). At this price point, the notebook offers an Intel Core i3-8130U as well as a combination of a 128 GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD. The display has a Full HD resolution. In this configuration, the Pavilion x360 represents a versatile notebook that can be used either for office work or Internet-browsing. It can also be used for streaming. The optional i5-8250U does provide more performance than the Core i3 chip, but it leads to a 200-Euro (~$226) increase in price and does not really expand the usability of the Pavilion x360.

As a convertible with a 360-degree hinge, the Pavilion notebook can be used in a wide variety of places and is especially suitable for playing back media content.

Unfortunately, the configuration of the Pavilion x360 14 with the Core i5-7200U and the GeForce 940MX that we reviewed last year is no longer available. In terms of performance, both the current Core i3-8130U and last year’s Core i5-7200U are roughly on the same level (both are dual-core CPUs). The new Core i5-8250U can offer up to 100% more performance in certain applications, because it has four physical cores.

Pricecompare

Ninth Place - Microsoft Surface Book 2

Microsoft Surface Book 2
Microsoft Surface Book 2

The 1333-Euro (~$1508) Microsoft Surface Book 2 is the most expensive device at the top of Amazon’s best-seller list. The Surface Book 2 is a detachable notebook. This means that all components are located in the display unit and that the keyboard dock can be removed. The keyboard dock comes with a hinge that can hold the display in a set position, which is why the Surface Book 2 can be used as a conventional notebook without any problems.

The Surface Book 2 is an exciting concept that combines the advantages of a tablet with those of a notebook. This extraordinary versatility has its price, though.

There are also quite a few hardware configurations here, especially when it comes to the choice of the CPU. Here you can choose either a Core i5 or a Core i7 processor. To be more precise, there are two CPUs: one quad-core (i7-8650U) and the other dual-core (i5-7300U). Thanks to its four physical cores, the Core i7 processor can offer up to 100% more performance in optimized applications. Coupled with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050, the Surface Book 2 turns into a full-blown multimedia machine that is quite suitable for producing media content such as video. However, it is not advisable to put the detachable under continuous load, as you can see from our extensive review of the Surface Book 2 with the Core i7 CPU and the GTX 1050 GPU.

With its compact size, respectable performance and the high-quality display, the Surface Book 2 is more than suitable for on-the-go content creation. Whether or not the price increase that comes with the Core i7 and the GTX 1050 is justified depends primarily on the type of work that you do. The image and video-editing software is going to receive a huge boost in performance from the dedicated graphics chip. The GTX 1050 is also fit for gaming. However, you will have to lower graphics settings in some titles in order to achieve playable frame rates.

Tenth Place - Apple MacBook Air (13 inches, 128 GB)

Undying: Apple MacBook Air
Undying: Apple MacBook Air

The MacBook Air can be described as an evergreen. No other laptop on Amazon’s best-seller list has managed to hang onto its place under the sun for as long as Apple’s entry-level ultra-mobile notebook. Currently, the 128 GB version retails for 859 Euros (~$972) on Amazon. This is the cheapest laptop that Apple sells at the moment. The MacBook Air was recently updated (you can find our review of the new MacBook Air here). However, the price was increased considerably because of all the new features. In the future, the cheapest laptop from Cupertino, California will cost you 1349 Euros (~$1526).

People have been talking about the end of the original MacBook Air for years now, and it finally came in 2018. Now the original MacBook Air is being sold off at a nice discount; that is for as long as supplies last, and they will not last long.

The strengths and weaknesses of the long-lasting MacBook Air, about which you can read in our review, are still here: Excellent build quality paired with a poor TN display. A good keyboard plus silent operation when using office applications as well as good battery life still make the MacBook Air a passable competitor to other devices from the Windows world. So long as users limit themselves to using only office applications and web-browsing, the MacBook Air is going to be a good fit. However, once users are assimilated into the Mac ecosystem, they are not very likely to ever leave it, and the next upgrade is going to cost more.
