Thanks to HyperTone 2024, Hasselblad cameras in smartphones are set to become even better, as sample photos suggest

In the course of the Paris Photo Exhibition last week, the cooperation between camera professionals from Hasselblad and smartphone manufacturers Oppo and OnePlus was renewed and taken to a new level. What we can expect in 2024 in terms of mobile photo quality in camera flagships such as the OnePlus 12 or the Oppo Find X7 Pro, but also partly in mid-rangers such as the Reno11 series, has already been hinted at with some sample photos and the keyword "HyperTone".

Leica and Xiaomi, like Leica and Huawei before them, are among the more successful collaborations between classic camera manufacturers and modern smartphone companies. Hasselblad and Oppo or OnePlus have been far less prominent in the minds of smartphone camera fans, which is certainly partly due to the problems the BBK Group is having in Europe with Nokia's patent lawsuits. Nevertheless, Hasselblad and Oppo are already positioning themselves for 2024, having recently renewed their collaboration at the Paris Photo Exhibition, which concluded on November 12, 2023.

HyperTone camera system for better portrait shots

The innovations are summarized under the term "HyperTone", thanks to which portraits with the smartphone camera should improve significantly in 2024. Light and shadow should depict the face in a much more three-dimensional way and skin tones should be much more accurate.

Three main cameras for perfect photos at all focal lengths

Oppo already promoted the concept of three equal-quality main cameras with the Find X6 Pro, which is unfortunately not available internationally. This is said to have been further improved in the Oppo Find X7 Pro and the like, as the impressive sample photos below demonstrate. In addition to the 16 mm ultra-wide angle and 23 mm equivalent wide angle, the improved periscope telephoto in particular is said to be even brighter and more versatile. Specifically, it is advertised as having 483% more light sensitivity compared to "other phones", which is not really saying much. The photos below look very good, although there is of course a lot of trickery involved in these marketing images.

More natural colors and Ultra HDR

According to the glossy brochures below, the strengths of Hasselblad tuning will be even more pronounced in Oppo's 2024 smartphone generation. In particular, colors should appear more natural than on other competing devices, and the company is also increasing its efforts in the area of HDR, similar to Google and Samsung's recent plans to expand support for Ultra HDR photos.

Particular attention has been paid to correct tone mapping and better noise reduction than rival brands. However, it remains to be seen how much of this actually reaches the end customer. Not only the Oppo Find X7 and Find X7 Pro are to benefit from the improved "HyperTone camera system", but also the Oneplus 12 and even the mid-ranger series Reno11 are expected to get some of the Hasselblad optimizations, as indicated by Oppo at the Paris Photo Exhibition.
