Sony Xperia 1 VIII gets Android 17 with desktop mode, camera upgrade, and more
Sony has begun rolling out Android 17 to the Xperia 1 VIII and, on this occasion, has published a webpage confirming details about the new features. According to initial user reports on Reddit, the update is already being rolled out to the first smartphones in Germany and the United Kingdom. However, as is usually the case, it will likely take several days before the update is made available for download to all users. According to Sony, the following models will also receive an update to Android 17 after the Xperia 1 VIII:
- Sony Xperia 1 VIII
- Sony Xperia 1 VII
- Sony Xperia 1 VI
- Sony Xperia 10 VIII
- Sony Xperia 10 VII
The Sony Xperia 1 VI, VII, and VIII gain access to a desktop mode with Android 17. When a monitor, keyboard, and mouse are connected to the smartphone, it transforms into a PC replacement, allowing users to browse the web, reply to emails, or stream videos on a large screen, among other things.
Sony is expanding the selection of wallpapers and clock designs for the lock screen, while Android 17 allows for more diverse customization of app icon styles. The redesigned Quick Settings allow you to display different settings in varying sizes and adjust their positions more flexibly.
Android 17 makes screen recording more versatile – it is now possible to record not the entire screen, but only a specific app, and to choose whether to record the smartphone’s audio or the sound from the microphone. Exclusively for the Xperia 1 VIII, there are also new presets for the AI Camera Assistant, which faced heavy criticism at launch.
