Xperia 1 VIII said to be a success, Sony comments on controversial AI feature and price
The Sony Xperia 1 VIII is not only more expensive than its predecessor, Sony has also replaced the innovative telephoto camera with a continuously variable zoom with a standard 48 MP periscope telephoto camera featuring a 1/1.56-inch sensor and 2.9x zoom, in the hope that the larger, high-resolution sensor would deliver even better image quality than the predecessor model’s telephoto camera, even with digital zoom.
In an interview conducted by IT Media with Sony’s Shohachi Ike and Eri Kitazawa, the company provided an update on the Xperia 1 VIII about two months after its launch. According to the interview, the flagship smartphone has been a resounding success. In Europe in particular, sales have increased significantly compared to the previous year’s model. Despite sharp criticism, the AI camera assistant is reportedly well-received and has led to Xperia 1 VIII users taking more photos on average than users of the Xperia 1 VII ($1,499 on Amazon).
Sony also attributes the criticism to its own communication regarding the feature – showing the camera assistant with before and after comparisons was not ideal, as this gave the impression that the feature would drastically alter photos rather than simply providing suggestions for camera settings. Sony emphasizes that true-to-life photos take priority over complex AI processing.
The new shape of the camera module was apparently necessary to make room for the larger cameras in the new model. Making the predecessor’s pill-shaped camera module even longer would have resulted in too great a shift in perspective when users switch between cameras. Sony attributes the higher price primarily to the more expensive telephoto camera and rising DRAM and NAND costs.
