Sony has just refreshed the WH-1000XM6, with a cheaper pair of WH-1000XM4 headphones to come, too. In response, Sonos has been revealed to have developed the Ace Ultra, a new pair of wireless over-ear headphones that will replace the ageing Sonos Ace.

Earlier this month, Roland Quandt reported that Sony was preparing to unveil a cheaper pair of WH-1000X headphones. Shortly afterwards, bilbil-kun expanded by revealing that Sony will be unveiling the WH-1000XM4C on September 7 for £219 and €349, compared to £349 and €333 it currently charges for the WH-1000XM6 (curr. $398 on Amazon).

Now, Quandt has returned with details about Sonos' next rival to the WH-1000X line. For context, the Sonos Ace arrived in May 2024 with a choice between black and white colours. Based on the images shared on WinFuture, Sonos will repeat the same trick with the Ace Ultra, which Quandt claims will debut next month.

Technical specifications remain unknown for the time being. Nonetheless, we can glean a few differences between the Ace and Ace Ultra from the photos provided. For instance, Sonos has included much deeper ear cups with this generation, which are joined by a repositioned wear sensor. Also, Sonos has changed its microphone design, with a thicker but shorter pill shape for the Ace Ultra.

As a result, we suspect that the Ace Ultra will feature enhanced noise cancellation compared to Sonos' current Ace headphones. Sonos has not added a 3.5 mm jack, though. Instead, the company includes a 3.5 mm to USB Type-C cable along with a Type-C charging cable. Pricing remains unknown for now, too.
