MWC 2024 | Samsung reveals more details about new lightweight Galaxy Ring
Samsung is showing the new Galaxy Ring at MWC 2024. The wearable was teased at the Galaxy Unpacked event in January, providing few details. While some information is still missing, we now know more about the hotly anticipated wearable.
The Galaxy Ring will be available in nine sizes, from 5 to 13, and three colors: gold, platinum silver and ceramic black. The versions weigh 2.3-2.9 g (~0.08-0.10 oz), making them slightly lighter than the equivalent Ultrahuman Ring AIR, with the size 5 weighing 2.4 g (~0.08 oz). Each ring size has a different battery capacity, ranging from 14.5 mAh to 21.5 mAh, which Samsung suggests provides a long battery life. For context, the Oura Ring has similar battery sizes, providing up to seven days of use on a single charge.
At the event, Hon Pak, Vice President of Samsung Electronics, confirmed that the wearable's three sensors will help to analyse your sleep by looking at heart rate, respiratory rate, sleep movement and sleep latency, or the time it takes you to drift off. Samsung has also announced two new features for the smart ring: My Vitality Score and Booster Card. My Vitality Score uses factors like sleep, activity and heart rate to illustrate your health, while Booster Cards advises you on improving your health based on the collected data. Both features will launch on the Samsung Health app later this year. Plus, the company's partnership with Natural Cycles will grow to include the Galaxy Ring for menstrual cycle tracking.
Regarding smartphone compatibility, the Galaxy Ring will only work with the Galaxy S24 series, at least to start with. In an interview with CNET, Pak said "We recognise the iOS/Android challenge, and we ultimately hope that our devices are of such caliber that people will be willing to switch". The Samsung Galaxy Ring will go on sale in the second half of this year, but an exact release date and pricing have yet to be announced.
