Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: Leaked hands-on images reveal extent of waterdrop hinge improvements
Leaker Ahmed Qwaider claims to have obtained hands-on images of the Galaxy Z Fold5, which Samsung will formally announce later this month at its next Galaxy Unpacked event. To recap, Samsung is also expected to introduce the Galaxy Tab S9 and Galaxy Watch6 series during the same event, as well as the Galaxy Z Flip5. While a hands-on of the latter has already surfaced online, the images embedded below are the first of the Galaxy Z Fold5.
As leaked official images previously showed, little will separate the Galaxy Z Fold5 visually from its predecessor. For example, Samsung has repositioned the LED flash housing for this year's model in a move that further links the design language of its Galaxy Z and Galaxy S smartphones. Reputedly, the Galaxy Z Fold5 will retain most of the Galaxy Z Fold4's cameras too, with a new 12 MP telephoto sensor the only change in this regard.
Unfortunately, it seems that Samsung's new waterdrop hinge will not eliminate the gap when this year's Galaxy Z Fold is closed. Unlike the Pixel Fold, the Galaxy Z Fold5 appears to still have a slight wedge shape, with the hinge mechanism visible between the two halves of the device. As such, the Galaxy Z Fold5 will launch with IPX8 certification against water but not dust. This year's Galaxy Z Fold will also contain the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset, among other minor changes from the Galaxy Z Fold4.
