Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 LTE 2022 tablet review – Update with improved battery life
Those who are looking for an affordable tablet for home or school will hardly get around the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7. For a time, the tablet had only few competitors, but lately more alternatives from other manufacturers that are also affordable are becoming available again.
In consequence, Samsung improves its sales hit with a current SoC and reintroduces it to the market with modern software. The price continues to be almost 200 Euros (~$221) for the LTE version, and those for whom WiFi is sufficient will only pay 50 Euros (~$55) less.
We take a more detailed look in our test whether the new (but really already three-year old) rendition of the tablet is still sufficient for everyday tasks or whether it would perhaps make more sense to look for a more modern alternative.

Case – Noticeable edges
Samsung has kept the metal case of the predecessor exactly the same. But this is completely ok: The bezels have a suitable size that keeps the tablet looking up-to-date, while still allowing you to hold the tablet comfortably without accidentally triggering the touchscreen.
At this point there are some lighter 10-inch tablets available on the market, but those won't bring a battery that lasts as long, and with its 477 grams (~1.05 lb), the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 2022 feels comfortable to hold in the hands.
The material transition between the display and the frame turned out a bit rough, and you can clearly feel the edges, which slightly reduces the impression of the tablet's quality. But otherwise, the Galaxy Tab shows good workmanship and offers a stable construction. It can only be warped minimally and doesn't creak.
Those who liked the silver or gold versions of the Tab A7 2020 will be disappointed, since the new rendition of the tablet is only available in dark gray with black display bezels.

Equipment – Meager storage
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 2022 is available with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, regardless of whether you pick the LTE version (SM-T509) or the WiFi version (SM-T503). Despite the more current SoC, not much has changed in the equipment otherwise. There continues to be Bluetooth 5.0 and a single USB-C port that is connected internally via the USB-2.0 standard.
We should mention here that most competitors offer more storage to their customers at this point. However, if you only surf the Internet most of the time anyways and only use few apps, the storage is sufficient.
microSD Card Reader
The card reader supports microSD cards with up to 1 TB of storage. Moving apps to the card continues to be unsupported, allowing you only to use the card to store media data.
In the test with our Angelbird V60 reference card, the microSD card reader of the Galaxy Tab A7 2022 performs at class level but is unable to make full use of the fast storage card's potential.

Software – Android 12 onboard
The software update alone makes the update of the Tab A7 a great improvement: First, you get a relatively current Android 12 in the state of delivery. Then that is overlayed by Samsung's OneUI 4.1, which offers some extensive adjustments to the operating system.
Although Samsung has preinstalled several third-party apps, most of them can be uninstalled without any problems. The Widevine L1 certification allows you to play streams from the large streaming services in Full-HD resolution.
At the time of this test, the security patches are from July 2022, which makes them hopelessly outdated. You should only count on some sporadic additional patches at most. The manufacturer doesn't say anything about a possible update to Android 13.
Communication and GNSS – A weak mobile reception
With the update of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7, you can choose between a pure WiFi or an LTE version. We test the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 SM-T509, which can also use the 4G net to access the Internet. It also supports telephony.
Nothing has changed in the frequency coverage of the mobile communication modem and all the important 4G bands for Europe continue to be supported. Using the Galaxy Tab A7 as a mobile Internet device when traveling to some other continents should also be possible, but several frequency bands are missing for worldwide usage.
In our random spot tests, the mobile reception is rather mediocre and cannot be compared to that of high-end smartphones.
WiFi 5 is included again. In the test with our Asus ROG Rapture AXE11000 reference router, the Galaxy Tab A7 2022 shows some good speeds while receiving data but drops behind the competitors when sending data.

Outdoors, it takes a fairly long time until the locating module determines our location reliably, and even then it only reaches an approximate accuracy of 8 meters (~26 ft). The Galaxy Tab A7 2022 doesn't communicate with a particularly large number of satellites.
Our practical test is meant to show how the tablet behaves when using it for everyday navigation. To test this, we jump on our bike, also taking the Garmin Venu 2 smartwatch for comparison.
While the result will hardly convince those users who value high precision, it is still sufficient for roughly tracing our route. The tablet often takes some shortcuts through housing blocks instead of following the route actually taken, or the position it determines lies next to the actual route.
Cameras – Plan for some image artifacts
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 2022 also relies on the technology of the predecessor with its camera equipment. There is again an 8-Megapixel camera in the back, and it has some significant problems in delivering usable pictures even under good light conditions. Even though the image contents are recognizable, they look washed out and grainy.
In lowlight conditions, some image artifacts appear in dark areas, and the image sharpness also decreases further. While you can use the tablet for snapshots or for documenting situations, you shouldn't expect any pretty pictures.
Is the main camera at least able to record usable videos? Well, if you disregard the pumping autofocus and slightly washed-out colors, the videos are usable, and particularly the fast brightness adjustment is convincing.
There is also a 5-Megapixel camera in front of the tablet. The selfies it creates are usable, as long as you don't try to enlarge them too much.

Accessories and Warranty – A good selection
The box of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 2022 includes a charger, USB cable, and a SIM tool.
With the high popularity of the device, despite its affordable purchase price Samsung also makes some accessories available, such as a keyboard cover that is also fairly affordable at this point at about 45 Euros (~$50). You can also get a protective cover for the back that includes a device stand. In addition, third party vendors also offer numerous covers for the tablet.
Samsung offers a manufacturer's warranty of 24 months for its devices, as long as the device was purchased in the EU.
Input Devices and Operation – Face recognition is available
Even though the manufacturer installs its own keyboard app, you can also replace it with another app without any problems. The 60-Hz touchscreen is fairly responsive. In this price class faster displays aren't the standard yet.
There is no fingerprint sensor, but you can use face recognition to unlock the tablet. The face is recognized as soon as you press the standby key, and with a slight delay the tablet can optionally also open up the display screen that was used last. The face recognition also works in the dark without any problems by using just the light of the display.
However, the face recognition technology used here is a software solution, making it not quite as secure against manipulation.
Display – Not the brightest star in the Galaxy
The Galaxy Tab A7 2022 comes with an IPS display that offers the class-typical resolution of 2,000 x 1,200 pixels. Compared to the predecessor, the display brightness has decreased slightly, but the brightness distribution is now more even.
Unfortunately, the black value has increased at the same time, causing the contrast ratio to drop and the screen to display a fairly dull image.
At least, the screen of the Galaxy Tab continues to refrain from using PWM.

Our measurements with the spectral photometer and the CalMAN software show a clearly noticeable blue tint in the display. In addition, the colors are reproduced fairly inaccurately, which is to say, too cool. Samsung doesn't offer any adjustment options for the white balance.
The response times are also fairly slow, which should be particularly annoying to gamers.

Due to the lack in display brightness, the tablet is hardly usable outdoors, and the reflections on the display are simply too strong.
On the other hand, the viewing angles create a good impression, and the image contents are still easily recognizable on the display even from very steep viewing angles.
Performance – A lot of power in the affordable tablet
The largest change in the 2022 version of the Galaxy Tab A7 is probably the SoC. Samsung switches to Unisoc, a Chinese manufacturer whose SoCs have been used in many affordable smartphones and tablets in the last few years.
The Unisoc T618 brings two Performance and six Efficiency cores with a clock speed of up to 2 GHz each. In the direct comparison with the predecessor, the performance differences are noticeable but not very drastic at up to 15%. The Galaxy Tab A7 2022 is easily able to keep up with other tablets in this price class.
In everyday operation, the Tab A7 runs smoothly when scrolling through the menus. However, in more demanding apps, there can often be stutters, and the available performance reserves are not particularly large.

In the graphics performance, the Galaxy Tab A7 2022 shows itself as fairly fast and is able to achieve one or the other advantage in the benchmarks compared to the competitors. However, we can also see that it is still an affordable device, and its equipment is fairly weak overall when considering demanding graphics computations.

The lame eMMC flash is unable to inspire any real enthusiasm, since it delays data transfers and load times. The Galaxy Tab A7 2022 shows itself particularly slow here. But since the other tablets of this price class don't offer storage that is much faster, you probably just cannot expect anything more at this point.

Games – Graphics errors in Diablo
Using this tablet for gaming will hardly be any fun. First, the frame rates determined with GameBench in PUBG Mobile and Diablo: Immortal are mediocre with not even stable 30 fps at high settings. And second, even low settings in PUBG Mobile will only get 38 fps with some significant drops intermittently.
In addition, there will also some hefty image artifacts in Diablo: Immortal. Even though you might be able to guess the positions of your gaming character and the enemies, the game isn't really any fun this way.
In our tests, the control via touchscreen, and if necessary, also the position sensor, works without any problems.

Temperatures
Such a 10-inch tablet offers a relatively large amount of space inside, allowing the SoC to be easily cooled. This is also noticeable in the Galaxy Tab A7 2022, which doesn't have any problems with temperature development. Even at full power over a long time period, the device only warms to a hardly noticeable 33.8 °C (92.8 °F).
During the stress test with 3DMark, we can also see that the performance doesn't suffer during longer operation.
3DMark Wild Life Stress Test
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 32.9 °C / 91 F, compared to the average of 34.1 °C / 93 F, ranging from 21.2 to 53.2 °C for the class Tablet.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 33.8 °C / 93 F, compared to the average of 33.5 °C / 92 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 22.7 °C / 73 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
Speakers
The affordable tablet brings four speakers, which hardly any manufacturer in this price class can offer. This also allows it to achieve a gentle stereo effect, even if the distance between the speakers is of course comparatively small.
The sound is powerful. While it slightly emphasizes the highs at full volume, it is quite good overall. Voices can be heard clearly, and music sounds clean.
However, HiFi fans will still prefer to use headphones or external speakers, which can be connected via the 3.5-mm audio port or Bluetooth 5.0. The selection of supported wireless Bluetooth codecs is rather meager. With SBC, AAC, aptX, LDAC, and Samsung's own SSC, the most necessary codecs are supported but not more than that.

Power Management – Efficient operation of the Galaxy Tab A7
Power Consumption
Compared to the predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 2022 has become significantly more efficient, also clearly surpassing other tablets in this price class. Particularly without any load, its power consumption is very low.
Using the 7.8-Watt charger, it takes up to 4:30 hours until the large battery is completely recharged. This is particularly annoying, since the tablet could also be charged at up to 15 watts, but Samsung has only included a charger that is too weak.

Battery Life
Our test unit is able to make good use of its efficiency, also achieving a good battery life: The powerful 7,040-mAh battery lasts up to 14:34 hours in our WLAN test.
The battery life under load is also convincing: You can play games for up to 4:10 hours before having to recharge the device again.
Interestingly, the predecessor had an even longer battery life with idle operation, so our current model still has some need for optimization. But considering the rare updates, you shouldn't have too much hope in this regard.

Verdict – Light and shadow in the Galaxy Tab A7 2022
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 2022 offers some particular features that make it a good choice among the affordable tablets. For example, it produces a convincing sound with its four speakers. In addition, the tablet hardly heats up at all under load, brings good performance values for its price class, runs efficiently, and the battery lasts for a long time.
On the other hand, there are also areas that are less convincing. First, there is the camera that produces a very limited photo quality even for a tablet, including some image artifacts. The screen is also very dark, and the color reproduction has a cold tint. In addition, the storage equipment isn't up-to-date anymore.
So it depends on what you want to use the Galaxy Tab A7 2022 for and what is important to you. Those who are looking for a solid companion particularly for indoors and those who only install few apps and don't care about the camera will get a solid tablet for little money.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 2022 is a gentle update of a classic with a good battery life. However, you shouldn't care too much about good cameras or a bright screen.
At this point, you get more storage from the competitors, such as the realme Pad, which also produces sound from four speakers, or the Lenovo Tab M10 2022, which was able to convince us with a good WLAN reception.
Price and Availability
The 2022 update of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 with the Unisoc processor appears to be unavailable in the US, UK, or India. In the US, only the very similar Galaxy Tab A8 is available with the Unisoc processor, for example at Amazon starting from $179.
