Case, equipment and operation - option for a lot of memory
Our test device of the realme Pad is something very special: We received a version with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB mass storage and LTE from the manufacturer, which is not yet available in most regions at the time of testing. In Europe, only the WiFi version of the Pad with 4 GB / 64 GB is currently offered. However, the three WiFi versions already have a recommended price:
- realme Pad WiFi 3 GB RAM / 32 GB mass storage: 239 Euros (~$270)
- realme Pad WiFi 4 GB RAM / 64 GB mass storage: 259 Euro (~$292)
- realme Pad WiFi 6 GB RAM / 128 GB mass storage: 289 Euro (~$326)
In other parts of the world, you can already find the LTE version in stores, which only costs a small surcharge there.
There is a hint of iPad in the choice of materials: Despite the fairly low price, the manufacturer has opted for an aluminum chassis that is available in gray or gold. Only the gray variant is currently available in Europe. The casing is actually a bit lighter than comparable tablets and also relatively compact for its screen size when compared with, for example, the Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus.
We check the microSD reader with our reference microSD card from Angelbird, which turns out to be significantly slower than in other tablets. In terms of Wi-Fi, however, the realme Pad proves to be competitive thanks to Wi-Fi 5. The LTE version offers all important LTE frequencies, but not more, so you should check whether the tablet works with mobile Internet abroad.
A fingerprint sensor is not found on the realme Pad, but facial recognition can be used. It works quite reliably, but you should not wear sunglasses or cover your face in any other way.
Android 12 is preinstalled on the tablet. realme adds its own UI on top of that, which changes the appearance slightly, but overall remains quite close to the vanilla Android. The security patches on our test device are from September 2021 and are thus a bit old at the time of testing.

Cameras - realme tablet with blurred lens
Cameras in tablets are one thing: Some users say they do not need the rear-facing lens at all. Others are happy about the possibility to at least take simple photos, scan documents and texts, or use QR codes. The front-facing camera, on the other hand, is indisputably more important than ever in times of home offices and video conferencing.
The realme Pad has an 8-megapixel lens on both sides. The main camera proves to be quite blurry and is really only suitable for quick snapshots. Video recordings can be captured in 1080p, but with low light and the autofocus is constantly refocusing.
The front-facing camera takes usable selfies, but the quality cannot keep up with good smartphone cameras.

Display - Strong blue cast
The screen with a slightly expanded Full HD resolution is roughly on par with similarly priced tablets in terms of brightness. With an average of just under 429 cd/m², you should also be able to use the realme Pad outdoors, but you will probably have to retreat into the shade in direct sunlight.
The black level is good, which also results in a decent contrast ratio, which in turn makes the colors on the screen appear a bit more vivid. However, according to our tests with the CalMAN software and the spectrophotometer, the image display has a very strong blue cast.
At very low brightness levels, the oscilloscope registers flickering at around 532 Hz. Sensitive natures should therefore, before buying, try out whether this causes them problems when viewing the screen.

The display backlight flickers at 532 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 10 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 532 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 19046 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
Performance, emissions and battery life - Good sound in the realme Pad
The MediaTek Helio G80 is a somewhat older SoC that has mainly been used in cheaper smartphones so far. In terms of performance, it is not that bad in the realme Pad and can keep up with similarly priced tablets.
The eMMC storage proves to be quite slow, but that is usual in this price range. Nevertheless, you have to wait for a long time during data transfers or loading times of games.
Fortunately, the tablet hardly heats up. There are 4 speakers in the case, for example, in Amazon's Fire HD 10 Plus there are only 2, which is a point for the realme Pad. But the number alone does not say anything about the sound quality. Therefore, we took the test device to the sound lab: The sound of the realme tablet proved to be quite loud and full when desired. The trebles are a bit overemphasized at maximum volume, but the Pad is still quite suitable for listening to music.
Qualcomm aptX HD is on board, so you can also listen to music in high quality via Bluetooth.
With 7,100 mAh, the battery has a slightly higher capacity than in the Amazon Fire HD 10 Plusbut smaller than the Lenovo Tab P11. The runtimes of 14:07 hours in our WLAN test are decent, but other tablets in the price range manage even more. It should be enough for two workdays with normal use. The device can be charged with a maximum of 18 watts, and a full charging cycle takes less than 2 hours.

Verdict - Maybe great equipped
The realme Pad is quite an interesting addition to the mid-range tablet market: If you have always wanted a low-cost pad with little weight and a metal casing, you should definitely take a look at the tablet.
The processor's speed is suitable for everyday use, the Wi-Fi is on class level, and there is even an LTE variant on request, even though realme cannot say at the moment whether the tablets with mobile Internet will officially come to Europe.
The option of ample storage and the good speakers are further plus points.
The realme Pad is a cheap, lightweight tablet that convinces with a good price-performance ratio and great equipment options.
Weaknesses are seen in the storage speed and the screen's color reproduction, but similarly priced tablets from other manufacturers hardly do better. The battery runtimes are also a bit shorter than those of the competition. Whether you notice the difference depends on your personal usage behavior.
Overall, the realme Pad shows a good price-performance ratio, and the LTE capability is even really great in this price range, provided the devices are available. An alternative is the Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus, however it might not convince everyone due to its limited software. Also the Lenovo Tab P11 is also in the same price range. You also get a lot of memory, a metal chassis, and even longer runtimes.
Price and availability
At the time of testing, the realme Pad is only available in Europe with WiFi, 4 GB RAM and 64 GB mass storage directly from the manufacturer. The RRP for this variant is €259 (~$292). The tablet is not yet available from other Internet retailers, but that should change in the next few weeks.
