Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus (2021) Review - Cheap "Android tablet" with Qi and keyboard

At the end of April this year Amazon presented the Fire HD 10 Plus (2021), a slightly improved version of the current Fire HD 10. The most powerful 10-inch tablet from Amazon so far offers the technical specifications of its little brother, but includes a little more RAM with 4 GB, wireless charging and the new Soft Touch surface.
There are four different versions of the Fire HD 10 Plus to choose from, which can optionally be combined with a productivity set:
- 32 GB mass storage / 4 GB RAM: 180 Euros (~$212) with advertising (RRP)
- 32 GB mass storage / 4 GB RAM: 195 Euros (~$230) without advertising (RRP)
- 64 GB mass storage / 4 GB RAM: 220 Euro (~$259) with advertising (RRP)
- 64 GB mass storage / 4 GB RAM: 235 Euro (~$277) without advertising (RRP)
The prices for the also available Productivity Set, which includes a Bluetooth keyboard with detachable case as well as a 12-month subscription for Microsoft 365 Single, are currently around 290 Euros (~$342).

Case - Amazon tablet with new surface
While the last generation of the Fire HD 10 series could not really convince us with its somewhat cheap-looking plastic back, Amazon brings more quality into play with its new soft-touch surface. Although representatives made of metal or glass feel more valuable, according to the manufacturer, the plastic material of the Fire HD 10 Plus was obtained from 28 percent recycled consumer waste. Besides this environmental aspect, the casing also offers a decent grip and fingerprints are well concealed. Amazon also wants to show the company's environmental thinking in the packaging with wood fiber materials that were obtained from responsibly managed forests or recycled sources.
The front of the 10.1-inch Fire tablet is made of reinforced aluminum-silicate glass. The design is still kept "classic", whereby wide bars around the IPS panel characterize the look. The screen-to-front ratio of 72 percent is accordingly not very modern.
There is hardly anything to complain about the case stability of the Fire HD 10 Plus in normal use, but twisting tests reveal a certain flexibility. The build quality is also on a good level for a low-priced mid-range tablet.
Features - Fire HD 10 Plus with 3.5 mm jack
The equipment list of the Fire HD 10 Plus is understandable in view of the low price. The 6,500 mAh battery is charged via a USB-C port on the right side of the tablet. The port allows USB OTG for quickly connecting external keyboards or USB sticks, but only complies with the USB 2.0 standard. Headphones can be connected via the built-in 3.5 mm jack.
The internal eMMC storage has a capacity of 64 GB in our review sample, but the user only has a good 55 GB available in the state of delivery. A storage expansion is still possible and can be increased by up to 1 TB with a microSD card. The storage media can be formatted as internal storage, but the exFAT file system is not supported.

We take a closer look at the memory slot's speed with our reference memory card Toshiba Exceria Pro M501. While the results in the CPDT benchmark are appealing, the performance in our JPEG Copy test is quite slow at 28 MB/s.

Software - Fire tablet only with Android 9
The adaptations of the US online retailer are very extensive and Fire OS has very little in common with the underlying Android operating system. The user interface of the Amazon tablet is not based on Android 10, but, like the predecessor on Android 9. The security updates cannot be read directly under Fire OS; according to the CPU-Z app, this is from October 2018.
The Fire tablet can only be used sensibly with an Amazon account and the associated services, such as music, video, audio books or eBooks. Of course, the Fire HD 10 Plus also supports the in-house voice assistant Alexa and can be used via voice control with the Hands-Free function. In addition, the Fire tablet in "Show Mode" is a possible replacement for the Echo Show model. The Kids Mode can also be used to create a safe area where no access to purchases via Amazon apps is possible. However, there is a special kids model from the Fire series that comes with a protective case that has a fold-out stand.
The Fire tablets only come with the Amazon app store ex-works, which offers some common apps, but lacks the broad app variety of a Play Store. However, Google services and the Google Play Store can easily be installed later. However, a Play Protect certification is not available, so some apps cannot be installed. Furthermore, the installation of the GMS leads to a loss of warranty, since Amazon sees improper use here.
Video content from video streaming services, such as the in-house Prime Video, can be watched in HD quality since a Widevine Level 1 certification is available. The Camera2 API level is "Full".
Communication and GNSS - Amazon tablet supports Bluetooth 5.0
The integrated WLAN module supports the IEEE 802.11 standards a/b/g/n/ac and transmits in the frequency ranges of 2.4 and 5.0 GHz. The transmission speed between the inexpensive 10-inch Fire tablet and our reference router Netgear Nighthawk AX12 is on the level of the predecessor. The data rates are in a decent range of about 300 MBit/s for the price range and are relatively constant during the test.
Since Amazon does not offer a model with an integrated cellular modem or GPS module, the Fire HD 10 Plus does not allow mobile browsing or positioning for navigation tasks on the go. Bluetooth version 5.0 is available for wireless communication. There is no chip for near-field communication (NFC).
A probable field of application for a tablet is video calls or video conferencing. We use the Skype app from the Amazon AppStore to check the voice quality of the built-in microphone. The voice reproduction with the Fire tablet is a bit quiet. However, we are understandable for our conversation partners.
Cameras - Fire HD 10 Plus with single cam
The 2 MP camera on the front has a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels in a 4:3 aspect ratio and an open aperture of f/2.2. Amazon does not provide detailed information about the installed camera module. The quality of the built-in optics on the front is only sufficient for the optical presence during video calls - but nothing more. Selfies look very blurred and out of focus. The exposure in the pictures could also be improved.
The 2 MP main camera of the predecessor would be replaced by a 5 MP lens with f/2.4 aperture. Due to the non-existent autofocus, the image sharpness is not really better than with the 2-MP optics on the front, and the pictures are also blurred here. Details and structures are often lost in blur and the dynamics in the pictures are also not very pronounced. Our test subject is barely recognizable in very low light.
The Fire HD 10 Plus captures colors surprisingly well. Under controlled lighting conditions, we subject the rear-facing main camera to further tests with the ColorChecker port and analyze the color reproduction of the 5 MP lens in comparison with the actual reference colors. The colors are really well reproduced. Only black and gray tones show larger deviations in the ColorChecker.
The image sensor used on the back records videos in a reasonable quality in a maximum Full HD resolution, and the front-facing camera only records moving pictures in 720p.

Accessories and warranty - Fire HD 10 Plus with many extras
The Fire HD 10 Plus (2021) comes with a modular power supply with a rated power of 9 watts and a USB Type-C cable. However, Amazon also offers additional accessories, which range from a matching protective case to a Bluetooth keyboard with a removable black cover (RRP: 50 Euros/~$59) and a wireless charging dock (RRP: 50 Euro) ranges.
The latter not only charges the Amazon tablet wirelessly with 15 watts, but can also be used with any Qi-enabled smartphone. The charging station offers a fabric-covered surface that is pleasant to the touch. Both in portrait and landscape mode, the Fire HD 10 Plus stands stably and securely thanks to a precisely fitting notch, but the use is limited to one set-up angle. The charging dock is particularly interesting with the tablet's show mode so that it can display information and still be controlled via voice command while charging.
In terms of productivity, the PU leather-covered Bluetooth cover, made of polycarbonate, is ideal. The cover, to which the Fire HD 10 Plus is attached via magnets, is well-made, but the pressure points of the keyboard are quite spongy, so typing could have been more comfortable. Considering the price range of the case, the workmanship is absolutely fine.
Amazon grants buyers of the Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus (2021) a limited one-year manufacturer's warranty. This Warranty is in addition to the legal warranty claims.
Input devices & operation - Amazon tablet without FaceUnlock
Neither a fingerprint sensor nor a biometric identification via face can unlock the Amazon tablet. The classic PIN or password must be used here. However, the capacitive touchscreen of the Fire HD 10 Plus can be used accurately up to the corners. Both the precision and the surface's gliding capabilities do not give reason for criticism.
Display - Fire HD 10 Plus with IPS panel
The 25.7 centimeter (~10.1 inches) diagonal LC display of the Fire HD 10 Plus has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16:10. This results in a fairly low pixel density of 224 ppi, which is better than the competition - with the exception of the Chuwi HiPad Plus - but they don't do any better in this price segment. However, the given resolution is okay for media consumption in everyday use, but small fonts look a bit blurry when browsing with Amazon's tablet.
In our luminance measurements, the inexpensive tablet achieves a maximum brightness of only 366 cd/m² on average. The low homogeneity in the panel's illumination of only 77 percent is striking. In the more realistic APL50 measurement, which simulates an even distribution of bright and dark areas on the screen, it is 457 cd/m² at the peak. Our measurements show that Amazon does without PWM for brightness control in the Fire HD 10 Plus.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM not detected | |||
In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18714 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
The somewhat mixed impression of the display is continued by the relatively high black value of 0.6 cd/m² (APL 50: 0.58 cd/m²). The not too rich black of the LC panel results in low contrasts below 1:800.
There is also room for improvement in terms of color accuracy and the accuracy of the grayscale. The IPS panel's Delta-E deviations are okay for a 180 Euro (~$212) tablet, but the predecessor performed better in our measurements.
Not only the display hardware is at a standstill, but the software still offers hardly any settings, such as adjusting the color temperature. Only a Blue Shade option is available for the user.

Performance - Fire Tab with lame SoC
The Mediatek Kompanio 500 (MT8183) is a SoC from 2019 that is manufactured in 12 nanometers and has a total of eight CPU cores (octa-core). These are composed of four Cortex-A73 and four Cortex-A53 cores that work together in a big.LITTLE array. The graphics unit is a Mali-G72 MP3.
The system does not always run smoothly in everyday use, but there are rarely big delays. The system performance is subjectively satisfactory for a low-priced tablet, but the loading times of the Amazon tablet are correspondingly long due to the slow eMMC storage. However, the eMMC flash storage installed in the Fire HD 10 Plus delivers write and read rates that are on par with the competition.
In the benchmarks, the MediaTek MT8183 in combination with 4 GB of RAM meets the competition with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 on an equal footing. However, the performance level turns out to be relatively low and compared to a Fire HD 10 (2019), the performance increase is rather marginal or non-existent despite the RAM upgrade. The performance of the aging Mali-G72 MP3 is low as well, but a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 or Lenovo Tab P11 does not offer better results in the GFXBench - with the exception of the onscreen rates, which are sometimes a bit low.

Games - Fire HD 10 Plus does not manage 60 FPS
The Mali-G72 only integrates 3 clusters in the MP3 version. The given graphics performance still ensures smooth playback even in demanding games like PUBG mobile at high details. The shooter is rendered with HD graphics settings at about 30 FPS after initial game content has finished loading in the background - the UHD option cannot be selected on. At least 54 FPS are possible in Armajet - we use the app from GameBench to determine our frame rates.
The integrated position sensors work without problems in gaming mode and the touchscreen works precisely.

Temperature
The casing of the Fire HD 10 Plus hardly heats up in everyday use. We use the battery test of the app GFXBench to check the internal heat dissipation during sustained load. The Manhattan 3.1 test clearly shows that the frame rate remains very constant after a prolonged load phase. Thus, performance drops, among others in games, are unlikely.
We cannot run the stress tests of the 3DMark benchmark due to the outdated Android version. Amazon would have to update Fire OS to Android 10 for this.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 31.2 °C / 88 F, compared to the average of 34 °C / 93 F, ranging from 21.2 to 53.2 °C for the class Tablet.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 30.5 °C / 87 F, compared to the average of 33.5 °C / 92 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.7 °C / 82 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
Speaker
The stereo speakers on the upper case side are sufficiently loud with over 90 dB(A) and the sound qualities are also quite convincing considering the price. As expected, there is hardly any bass in the sound image, but the recorded curve in the Pink Noise test is relatively linear. Especially in comparison with the Fire HD 10 (2019) the high and super-high tones in the sound picture are improved.
A better sound output via headphones is made possible either via the 3.5 mm jack or via Bluetooth 5.0. The noise level of the jack is a bit pronounced at 76.2 dBFS, but the achieved volume is satisfactory. Only SBC is supported in terms of BT codecs.

Power management - Fire HD 10 Plus with long runtime
Energy Management
The power consumption is on a decent level for a 10-inch tablet. Compared to the Fire HD 10 2019 the 2021 generation is a bit more energy efficient.
A full charge takes just under 4 hours with the included 9-watt adapter when the device is in standby mode. The Qi-certified Fire HD 10 Plus can be charged in about 30 minutes less with the optional 15-watt wireless charging dock.

Battery life
In our real-world battery test with a brightness of 150 cd/m², the Amazon tablet positions itself slightly behind a Fire HD 10 (2019) with almost 15 hours of browsing with the WLAN module enabled. However, the Plus model is clearly below that with only 12 hours of video playback. Nevertheless, the runtimes are on a very decent level overall, and slightly better compared to a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 10.4 (2020) with a larger battery.

Pros
Cons
Conclusion of the Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus
It is difficult to judge the Fire HD 10 Plus solely based on the technical specifications. The evaluation depends on the user's affinity for the US giant because the Fire tablet can only be used properly with an Amazon account and Prime membership. Under this condition, the Plus model is a nice "shopping tablet" with the focus on media consumption in the Amazon universe - but only related to the sofa at home. The spearhead of the Fire tablet series still does not feel at home outdoors because the Fire HD 10 Plus is rather "worse" in terms of brightness and illumination of the panel.
When the Fire Tab is used as a "classic" Android tablet, the weaknesses of the Fire HD 10 Plus become apparent. The rather limited Amazon App Store can easily be complemented by the Play Store, but the outdated Android-9 base has a negative impact here. However, the SoC and especially the slow eMMC storage are not really up to date anymore, especially considering smartphones in this price range. Amazon is still treading water here even after 2 years of further development.
The Fire HD 10 Plus only deserves a recommendation for Amazon customers who appreciate the highly customized and tailored operating system.
In view of the MSRP of our test device of 235 Euros (~$277), the price-performance ratio can therefore be discussed. Technically, the Plus model is also in the entry-level segment, which is reflected in the solid base price of the basic version including advertising. However, buyers of the ad-free version with 64 GB of storage are in a price range where tablets from other manufacturers including GMS, such as the Lenovo Tab P11 or Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 10.4 (2020) are a very good option with fewer software restrictions.
