Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite Tablet Review : Very affordable Samsung tablet in mini format
Compact Android tablets are practical and handy, but few and far between. Therefore, we only found a handful of comparative devices for the 8.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite in our review database.
With a starting price of 169 Euros (~$199) and MediaTek's Helio P22T MT8768T SoC, Samsung's Galaxy Tab A7 Lite belongs to the entry-level segment in terms of performance. Nevertheless, the computing power of the eight-core CPU is supposed to be just as sufficient for watching Netflix as for gaming sessions. The small tablet also has stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, and the 5100 mAh battery is large enough to last until the series finale.
For its 8.7-inch display, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite relies on a TFT panel with a resolution of 1340 x 800 pixels, which corresponds to a 5:3 aspect ratio.

Case - Galaxy Tab A7 Lite with high-quality chassis
Samsung offers its mini tablet in the colors "Dark Gray" and "Silver". The colors refer to the color of the back cover. The display bezel is black in the "Dark Gray" variant that we tested, and it is white in the "Silver" variant.
The screen's edge is relatively wide on the two short sides, where a Dolby Atmos speaker is also located, which is why the display-to-surface ratio of 81% is rather low. Due to its compact dimensions, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite fits well in the hand, but it is quite heavy at 366 grams (~12.9 oz).
Despite the low price, the build quality is good because Samsung's tablet scores with a high-quality exterior. It can only be depressed or twisted minimally due to its stable frame. The plastic keys only have minimal play and have a pleasantly firm pressure point.
Features - 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage in the Samsung tablet
Samsung's Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is equipped with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. It can be expanded via microSD card, which can be up to 1 TB in size. The Wi-Fi version we tested costs 169 Euros (~$199) in Samsung's store, while 199 Euros (~$235) are due for the LTE version.
The tablet's other features include an OTG-capable USB 2.0 port as well as two Dolby Atmos-capable speakers that are distributed over the short sides. A 3.5 mm jack is also included, but without an antenna or radio function for connected headsets. In return, the Samsung supports DRM Widevine L1 and can play streams in HD quality.
microSD card reader
With Toshiba's Exceria Pro M501 as the reference memory card, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite delivers a solid microSD performance. The copying speed is high, and even expensive tablets cannot do a better job with sequential reading. The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is only a bit slow in sequential writing.

Software - Android 11 and Kids Mode
Samsung equips its small tablet with Android 11 and the in-house user interface OneUI 3.1. The Android security patches were updated on May 1 at the time of testing in early August, so they are not quite up to date anymore.
Compared with the standard Android, OneUI only makes a few changes and scores with a clear layout including an app drawer. Only a handful of third-party apps are preinstalled in addition to Google and Samsung apps: Netflix, Spotify and the Microsoft apps Office, OneDrive and Outlook. Apart from Netflix and OneDrive, all third-party apps can be uninstalled.
A special feature is the Samsung Kids Mode. It can be activated conveniently via the access bar and offers a safe media and gaming environment for the youngsters.
Just under 19 GB of the tablet's 32 GB storage space is free. The micro-SD card can be used as the standard storage for media data, such as photos. However, we could not store app data on it in the test.
Communication and GNSS - Fast and stable WiFi 5
The WiFi version of the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite communicates in WLAN with WiFi 5 speed and also supports Bluetooth 5.0, but not NFC.
With our reference router Netgear Nighthawk AX12, the Samsung tablet achieves good transfer rates that are very stable in send and receive directions. With a maximum of 342 MBit/s, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite ranks pretty far ahead among the comparison devices and can even outperform the much more expensive Apple iPad Mini 5.
Due to its handy format, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is well suited for mobile use. This is also supported by the tablet's precise positioning via GPS (L1, L5), GLONASS (L1), BeiDou (B1, B2a) and Galileo (E1, E5a). The Samsung can locate us indoors with an accuracy of up to 2 meters (~6.6 feet), and outdoors even within one meter (~3.3 feet) - both are very good results.
The precision also remains high on the road. Samsung's Galaxy Tab A7 Lite recorded our 10-kilometer (~6.2 miles) bike ride almost as accurately as the Garmin Edge 500 professional navigation device.
Cameras - Only suitable for snapshots
Samsung only provides very few details about the cameras of the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, certainly because they are not the tablet's flagship. The selfie camera has a resolution of 2 MP and the main camera 8 MP. Both can record videos with a maximum of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30 frames per second.
You do not necessarily expect good photo and video quality from a cheap tablet. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is no exception. Pictures taken with the selfie camera are blurry, noisy and lack contrast.
The main camera delivers a better picture quality and shoots relatively sharp pictures in good lighting conditions. However, the photos show few details, which is particularly noticeable in zoom shots and generally in dark picture areas. They are often overexposed or underexposed and lack almost any dynamics due to the flat colors. In low-light conditions, the camera finally surrenders and can only capture blurry outlines.

Daylight scene 1Daylight scene 25x ZoomLow light exposureWe take another look at the main camera under controlled lighting conditions. At optimal brightness (upper color chart), the tablet reproduces the original colors quite accurately with the exception of dark gray tones and renders the test chart relatively sharply. At minimum brightness (lower color chart), however, all accuracy is lost and the test chart is only dimly visible.
Accessories and warranty - Samsung tablet with 7.8 watt power adapter
Samsung includes a 7.8-watt power adapter (5V/1.55A), a USB cable (type A to C), a SIM tool, a quick start guide, and a booklet with warranty information with the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite. Samsung does not offer any special accessories for its tablet.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite comes with a 24-month warranty.
Input devices & operation - Galaxy Tab A7 Lite with face recognition
The capacitive touchscreen of Samsung's Galaxy Tab A7 Lite offers pleasantly little resistance to the fingers and responds precisely to inputs up into the corners. However, the response speed could be a bit faster from time to time. Memory- and performance-hungry apps, such as PUBG Mobile, put a noticeable strain on the tablet - everything runs smoothly in the game, but switching between the Android interface and the game is a bit sluggish.
The tablet does not have a fingerprint sensor, but it offers biometric authentication via face scan. Provided the environment is bright enough, the 2D unlock works quite reliably, but it is not very fast.
Display - TFT screen in 5:3 aspect ratio
The TFT screen of the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is 8.7 inches and has a resolution of 1340 x 800 pixels. This results in a rather low pixel density of 179 PPI, which is partly noticeable in everyday use. For example, small fonts are not too sharp on the 5:3 screen.
On a white background, the TFT display achieves an average brightness of 332.1 cd/m², but does not manage a very even illumination (85%). The luminance increases to 360 cd/m² in evenly distributed bright and dark image areas (APL50). A maximum of 355 cd/m² is possible with an active ambient light sensor. In the lowest brightness setting, the screen still shines with 13.12 cd/m². Good: The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite does not use PWM to control the display brightness.

With the exception of brightness, you cannot adjust any picture parameters on the Samsung tablet, so you have to take what you get. And that is average at best. Due to the low black value of 0.24 cd/m², the Galaxy Tab A7 displays content with a high contrast (1500:1), but this only happens with a clear blue cast due to the too high color temperature of 8744 K. The screen's brightness is also very low. With delta E values of 6.7 (colors) and 7.6 (grayscale), the display is also not particularly true to color.

Due to its maximum luminance of 360 cd/m², the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite quickly reaches its limits in outdoor use. It is difficult to read the content in direct sunlight. The eyes are also strained in the shade in the long run.
The viewing-angle photos do not reflect it too well, but the TFT panel of Samsung's tablet is not too viewing-angle stable. It already darkens considerably when you look at the display even at a slight angle. However, the screen does not darken any further and remains legible even from extreme side views.
Performance - entry-level MediaTek MT8768T SoC
Samsung's Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is powered by MediaTek's Helio P22T (MT8768T). The eight-core SoC belongs to the entry-level performance category and consists of 8 ARM Cortex-A53 cores. They are distributed over two clusters of 4 cores each and clock with up to 2.3 and 1.8 GHz, respectively. The graphics chip of the MT8768T is the PowerVR GE8320.
With the MediaTek SoC, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite's system performance is not really impressive. Overall, the handling is sluggish because there are always small delays, for example when switching between many open apps, and the tablet does not react quickly at any time.
In terms of performance, the MediaTek MT8768T is just ahead of its counterpart in the Huawei MatePad T8, the MT8768. Both are closely followed by the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus 2020, which is equipped with the MT8168 a somewhat weaker MediaTek SoC. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 429 of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2019) cannot quite keep up with the MediaTek trio.

The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite also narrowly wins the internal MediaTek competition in browser performance against the Huawei MatePad T8 and the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus 2020. The Apple iPad Mini 5 is out of the competition, as it was in the synthetic benchmarks, because it plays in a completely different performance and price league than the Samsung tablet. However, we still include it because it is one of the rather rare 8-inch tablets.

The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite does not deliver particularly outstanding read and write rates, which is due to its rather sluggish eMMC flash storage. However, the competition does not offer higher speeds either.

Games - Good performance with reduced graphic details
As a compact gaming tablet, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite cuts quite a figure. Its Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers deliver solid stereo sound, and it responds quite quickly to inputs. However, you cannot expect current games to run smoothly at full details.
One such case is PUBG Mobile, which does not allow better graphics settings than "Balanced" / "Medium" and is then still displayed by the tablet with no more than 25 frames per second on average. However, you can still play the shooter well with that. Higher frame rates are also possible in graphically less demanding games. Asphalt 8 (Google Play does not offer Asphalt 9 for download on the Samsung) and Armajet both run at 30 frames per second.
We determine the frame rates with the tool Gamebench.
Emissions - Cool Samsung tablet
Temperature
The Samsung tablet hardly heats up during operation. We measured 37 °C (98.6 °F) at the "hot spot" around the main camera, which is hardly more than body temperature. Therefore, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite always feels comfortable when held in the hand.
The MediaTek SoC also ensures moderate temperatures inside the tablet. The Wild Life benchmark is not supported, so we cannot make a statement about the Wild Life stress test stability. However, GFXBench's T-Rex and Manhattan stress test scenarios run smoothly. They show that the tablet does not have to throttle its performance even after running the two benchmark tests 30 times, so it never gets too hot internally.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 37 °C / 99 F, compared to the average of 33.7 °C / 93 F, ranging from 20.7 to 53.2 °C for the class Tablet.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 32.8 °C / 91 F, compared to the average of 33.2 °C / 92 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 30.3 °C / 87 F, compared to the device average of 30 °C / 86 F.
Speaker
The stereo speakers of the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite support Dolby Atmos and produce a good sound with linear mids and very linear highs. However, bass tones are practically not audible despite the prestigious name, which is why the speakers sound a bit thin all in all.
Headsets and external speakers can be connected to the tablet via a 3.5 mm jack or Bluetooth 5.0. A small drawback: The audio jack's signal-to-noise ratio of 58.09 dBFS is not particularly good.

Power management - Samsung tablet with good battery runtimes
Power consumption
The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is unremarkable in terms of power consumption, since it neither consumes a lot nor very little power. It thus joins the ranks of the other Android tablets that, like the Samsung, need just under 3 watts in idle and about 4 watts on average under load.
The 5100 mAh battery is recharged via the included 7.8 watt power supply. It takes exactly 4 hours to completely recharge the battery from 0 to 100 percent in the test.

Battery life
Samsung's tablet achieves good runtimes with a full battery charge. The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite lasts almost 13 ½ hours during simulated web surfing and playing an HD video in a continuous loop. The comparison devices all have similar runtimes, whereas the Huawei MatePad T8 scores the best overall.

Verdict - mini tablet without premium features
Samsung's Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is a very handy multimedia tablet that can definitely convince in its core task despite its 169 Euro (~$199) starting price: It scores with a high-contrast display, Dolby Atmos speakers with solid but somewhat thin sound, and good battery runtimes. There is also a Kids mode, which makes the Samsung tablet suitable for families.
With the MediaTek MT8768T, Samsung's tablet has a mediocre performance because there are occasional delays during operation. The eight-core SoC quickly reaches its limits in games, but games run smoothly in lower details.
Samsung's Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is an inexpensive 8-inch tablet for web surfing and multimedia that is also suitable for one or two games. Disadvantages are the low-resolution display, the mediocre performance, weak cameras and the meager storage.
The low price also demands compromises in terms of features. Despite good GPS, you will have a hard time outdoors with the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite because its screen does not shine too brightly and is not very viewing-angle stable. Furthermore, 32 GB of RAM is quite little storage space, even though it can be expanded via microSD card. There are also negative points for the cameras, which are only of snapshot quality
Alternatives to the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite are for example the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus 2020, the Huawei MatePad T8 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0. The Apple iPad Mini 5 (2019) is in a completely different price and performance league, but should not be missing from the list of 8-inch tablets. It might be relaunched as iPad Mini 6 before the end of the year.
Price and availability
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite costs €169 (~$199) in the Samsung store if you opt for the Wi-Fi variant. With LTE, the tablet costs €199 (~$235). In some other online stores, for example at Amazon you pay a bit less for both variants.
