Case, equipment and operation
The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro contains an ordinary Fire HD 10 (2021) in the small memory configuration. In contrast to the conventional Kids Edition, the Pro is aimed at older children from elementary school age and is also available in a 7- and 8-inch variant. The included protective cover is slimmer and available in four different designs: Sky Blue, Black, Spaceships and Graffiti. The build quality leaves a decent impression and the tablet looks well protected and not as chubby as the Kids Edition.
Besides the protective case, which has a fold-out stand, the physical scope of delivery of the Kids Pro does not differ from that of the conventional Fire HD 10. However, the two-year worry-free warranty is also included here, so that the device will be repaired or replaced free of charge in case of damage. Amazon also includes a free year of Amazon Kids+ (otherwise starting at 2.99 Euros/~$3.57 per month), which includes numerous apps, games, videos, and selected books as well as Audible audiobooks.
The USB-C port works according to the 2.0 standard and supports OTG so that external storage devices or peripherals can be connected. The storage can be expanded via microSD card and nominally also formatted as internal storage, but this requires a performance class 10 SD card. It is just a pity that the tablet does not recognize any of our UHS cards as such.
A Wi-Fi 5 module is available for connecting to WLAN networks, but it does not use MIMO antenna technology and shows correspondingly low data rates with our reference router Netgear Nighthawk AX12. However, the stability of the WLAN is very good and the range also convinced us in the test. A GNSS receiver is not available.
The capacitive touchscreen of the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro recognizes up to ten simultaneous touches and implements inputs quickly and reliably. The display is protected by a reinforced aluminum-silicate glass that offers good gliding properties. Biometric security features are not available.

Software and parental control - Fire OS sets hard limits
Amazon's Fire HD 10 Kids Pro runs its own operating system Fire OS 7.3, which is a heavily adapted version of the older Android 9.0 Pie.
The interfaces of the kids' profiles have been visually redesigned and are now very clearly structured. In the parent dashboard, the usage times as well as the screen time can be defined per app type. Restricting audio content is only possible to a limited extent, because this only includes the company's own audiobook service Audible.
In general, usage is very focused on the retail giant's range and services. The app offer is still okay for children, but especially older adolescents will miss some popular apps that are known from the App Store or Play Store, because the Amazon Appstore shows big gaps in this respect. This also applies to popular apps in the German education system. While Anton is still available, apps for Padlet, schul.cloud, Moodle or Phase6 are missing, for example. For some systems, it is possible to switch to the browser, but this is not optimal. An alternative would be to install the respective apps manually as APK, but this is neither desired by Amazon nor particularly user-friendly. It is also difficult to back up the saved games due to the lack of a cloud connection if the respective developer does not offer an internal solution.
It also becomes problematic when data is to be exchanged via the child profile. This already starts with the fact that photos taken with the camera can only be viewed via the camera app, screenshots seem to disappear in data nirvana. It is not clear to us how the data can leave the tablet, which makes the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro practically unusable for homeschooling. The restrictions are simply too strong.
What is new is the possibility to make video calls, phone calls or messages via the kids' profiles. Alexa integration is used for this, which severely restricts the circle of users, but greatly simplifies handling and allows parents to only release individual contacts for their own child. The Alexa app can be used to create a corresponding remote station on any device with Android, iOS or iPadOS , so that the dear little ones can communicate easily and free of charge. It is also possible to send text and voice messages via this system.
Cameras - Basic Setup for the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro
The cameras of the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro are limited to a solid basic configuration. The front-facing camera is perfectly sufficient for video calls, but you have to make sure that no backlight falls on the lens, otherwise it will darken very much.
The pictures taken with the main camera are poor in detail, contrast and dynamics. The image quality is just sufficient for simple documentations, but the subject has to be sufficiently brightly illuminated since Amazon's tablet does not have its own auxiliary light.
Display - Amazon tablet with IPS panel
The 10.1-inch IPS display of Amazon's Fire HD 10 Kids Pro delivers an appealingly high resolution and, for the first time, an ambient light sensor. The brightness is on a similar level in full-screen as well as APL50 measurements, and the full luminosity is available in manual mode. Unfortunately, the panel is less evenly illuminated and the contrast should be better as well. Although sufficient reserves are still available outdoors on cloudy days, the reflections can be annoying.
The color reproduction analyzed with CalMAN is too cool, but it is on a decent level considering the price range. It is also positive that the brightness is not controlled via pulse width modulation.

Performance, emissions and battery life
The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro is powered by a MediaTek MT8183 which can fall back on 3 GB of RAM. The SoC provides decent system performance, and there should not be any problems with games from the app store, but more demanding titles will have to be executed with reduced details. The tablet's memory is also quite slow. The surface temperatures always remain pleasantly low.
The two speakers are oriented towards the front and provide a decent sound as long as they do not play too loud. Then they are characterized by a very treble-heavy sound image that sounds a bit hollow. The audio jack's performance (SNR: 76.20 dBFS) is satisfactory. A volume warning already starts at 72 dB(A), which is quite appropriate for sensitive children's ears, but no volume limit can be set.
The battery runtimes are shorter than in the 2019 model, but they are still on a good level.

Pros
Cons
Verdict - Fire HD 10 Kids Pro is a good entertainer
The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro is a good entry-level tablet that is aimed at children from elementary school age. However, the Pro addition is a bit irritating because the tablet is not really convincing as a companion for school. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that important apps for school are not available in the Appstore, and on the other hand, the software of the children's profiles is too limited to be able to work even halfway productively with it.
The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro is a good entry-level tablet, but its software has a few pitfalls
However, the integrated stand makes the Amazon tablet very suitable as a streaming or conference platform. The display and the speakers also deliver a solid performance. It can also be practical that the little ones can easily start phone calls or video calls via the Alexa network. Otherwise, we see the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro more as an entertainment product that not only makes accessing video streams very easy, but also provides fans of eBooks and audiobooks with content easily, especially those from the Amazon universe.
A comparable scope of delivery or warranty cannot be found at the competition. However, the Lenovo Tab M10 or Galaxy Tab A7 are also good multimedia tablets that are better suited for homeschooling, offer their own children's modes, can be supplemented with Google Family and have full access to the extensive Google Play Store.
Price and availability
The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro can be purchased directly from Amazon, but is also available via Cyberport and MediaMarkt.
