Case, Software and Operation
The tablet included in the scope of delivery is identical to the conventional Amazon Fire HD 10 (2019). For details on this tablet, please refer to its review. The special feature of the Kids Edition is the new bumper, which is supposed to protect the Fire tablet from rough handling and falls and offers a fold-out stand. The brightly colored material can be pushed in a little and reliably cushions smaller falls. The stand holds the tablet stably in the desired position, but has only one adjustment level. A disadvantage is the strongly increasing dimensions and the comparatively high weight of the tablet together with the bumper.
Another special feature is the software of the Kids Edition. The special user interface of the Kids profiles is clearly arranged and child-friendly, but in combination with FreeTime Unlimited, which is included free of charge for one year, the little ones quickly find themselves at the mercy of a surplus of content. A positive feature is the quite flexibly configurable usage time, which however only differentiates between books, videos, apps and a total screen time. A separate setting of audio content or even individual apps is unfortunately still not possible. More details can be found in the Fire 7 Kids Edition review.
Cameras - Kids Edition without additional functions
With a 2-MP camera on the front and back, the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition does not offer a particularly attractive camera configuration. As expected, the quality of the recordings is mediocre to poor.
Amazon has not made any major adjustments for the camera app. The software-sided surfaces are now blue instead of black and the user interfaces have been enlarged a bit. A few AR filters or something similar would certainly have increased the fun factor.
Display - Fire HD 10 with bright IPS panel
The Amazon Fire HD 10's 10.1-inch IPS panel has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels and delivers a good pixel density. Due to the comparatively high luminosity, it is also suitable for outdoor use, but direct sunlight should be avoided.
The uniformity of illumination is good and the values also remain constant during APL50 measurements. Another positive aspect is that Amazon does not use pulse width modulation. The color display, which we checked with the CalMAN analysis software, is also absolutely okay considering the price range.

Performance, Emissions and Battery Life
Amazon provides the Fire HD 10 with a rather young MediaTek-SoC, which in combination with the two GB RAM is well equipped for all everyday tasks. The gaming performance is certainly not outstanding, but Amazon's App Store isn't equipped with demanding games either. The built-in eMMC memory is also sufficiently fast.
The Fire HD 10 doesn't get particularly warm even without a bumper, with this one there is practically no increase in surface temperatures to be felt.
The two loudspeakers are well positioned and deliver a decent sound image as long as they're not set too loud. Alternatively, an audio jack or Bluetooth can be used for the sound output. On the software side, a volume limiter would be desirable, at least for the child profiles.
The battery life is a positive surprise, as it turns out very well with fifteen and a half hours and the Fire HD 10 Kids Edition doesn't give the competition a chance.

Pros
Cons
Verdict - Good, but the software is stagnating
Amazon offers the Kids Edition for an additional charge of around 50 euros compared to the conventional Fire HD 10. There are no special offers, a thick bumper with an integrated stand, a free year of FreeTime Unlimited and a two-year carefree warranty, which covers most damage to the tablet. Certainly not only for children a suitable offer.
The tablet itself offers a good IPS display, decent speakers, integrated Amazon Alexa and the Echo Show mode for this price range. The Octa-Core-SoC delivers a good everyday performance and the 32 GB measuring memory can be expanded via microSD card.
The hardware and features of the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition are really good, but we still see room for improvement in the software.
With the special offers for children, the US giant offers a wide range of apps, video, audio books and eBooks, especially with FreeTime Unlimited, which is specially adapted to this age group. Unfortunately, the software has been stagnating in its further development for years. Access to audio content, for example, cannot be regulated at all, nor is it possible to limit individual apps. Especially for older children, controlling media time via Google's Family Link and screen time management can therefore make more sense. Similarly, the user must also accept a restricted Amazon universe.
