The Galaxy S23 series of premium smartphones is now 2 years out of date; however, Samsung is already working on a major software update for the line, according to a new leak. It asserts that devices from the range have been spotted running an upcoming version of the OEM's One UI based on Android 16.

The Galaxy S23 line of former Android flagships is still only just getting the latest One UI 7.0 (with the April 2025 security patch) stable software upgrade worldwide - although it will also eventually get an even newer version of the same software, if the latest rumor are to be believed.

It is based on the discovery of multiple "Galaxy S23" devices on Geekbench, all listed as running Android 16 rather than the Android 15 basis of One UI 7.

The handsets all apparently identify as the vanilla S23 (or Samsung SM-911U) or larger S23+ (the SM-S916U), while the higher-end S23 Ultra (the SM-S918U) fails to feature in this leak to date.

Nevertheless, they all run the line's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy platform and have at least 8GB of RAM apiece.

One UI 7.0 for the Galaxy S23 series mainly functions to install new Galaxy AI features such as Note Assist, Call Assist and Interpreter, and also adds the Google Gemini app to the smartphones (although the functions of the S23 Ultra's frankly more useful S Pen remain intact).

One UI 8 is thought to consist of iterative updates to the same suite of features thus far; then again, it might also confer Android 16's increasingly strict security upgrades, improved use of UWB and Live Updates on the ~2-year-old devices, even the most powerful of which can be found for about $600 in Renewed condition on Amazon at the time of writing.
