Just a couple of days after quietly launching the Pocket Mini V2, Retroid has announced that the handheld is now in stock and available to buy.
The Retroid Pocket Mini V2 arrives as a new variant that fixes the issues that plagued the Retroid Pocket Mini launched last year. The original Pocket Mini suffered from a display issue that prevented it from properly rendering CRT shaders. Initially believed to be a software bug, it turned out to be a problem with the screen itself.
Retroid originally provided the option for buyers to return affected units, but made a bigger mess by putting a cap on the number of units that could be returned. Following a heavy backlash, it removed the limit and offered a $10 refund to those who wished to keep their device. It also announced that it was developing a new custom display panel that will be used for a redesigned version of the Pocket Mini.
Shortly after that announcement, it revealed that a free DIY kit that includes a replacement screen taken from the Pocket Classic would be made available for those who wanted to fix their units. Unfortunately, the display replacement process turned out to be quite difficult, even for experienced folks.
The early arrival of the Retroid Pocket Mini V2 comes as a surprise considering Retroid said back in March that the launch window for a revision of the Pocket Mini featuring the newly developed display will be about 12 months. Considering the short time, it's possible Retroid is shipping the new Pocket Mini with the replacement screen it offered with the DIY kit and not a brand new display.
Nevertheless, the Pocket Mini V2 is available to order now for $199, the same price as the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro (available on Amazon for $199). Retroid is offering a $10 discount when you use the code 'V2SAVE10' at checkout. The offer lasts only for 72 hours starting from today, May 10. Shipping for the handheld begins on May 14.
