MagyarCES 2024 | Philips unveils 5000 series Smart Deadbolt securing homes with palm vein scans
Philips has announced the 5000 series Smart Deadbolt, which uses highly secure and accurate palm vein scans to unlock doors.
Several keyless methods for unlocking smart door locks exist and include pin pads, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth authentication, fingerprint readers, and vein readers. Pin pads and fingerprint readers can be bypassed with physical hacks such as a camera trained on the pin pad, examining which numbers are dirtier, or simply cloning a fingerprint. Phones used for wireless authentication can be stolen.
Palm veins are hidden under the skin and cannot be copied or stolen easily, however the Philips Smart Deadbolt can also be set to unlock by pin pad, Wi-Fi, and key for homeowners such as the disabled without hands who want alternatives. When enabled, the lock can be controlled remotely over Wi-Fi from a smartphone or through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant by voice.
For guests, one-time and limited pin codes can be created for entry. They can also use the Philips smartphone app to gain entry over Wi-Fi when authorized. The built-in, illuminated doorbell button rings the included wireless, doorbell chime and alerts owners through the smartphone app.
A unique feature of the Smart Deadbolt is the proximity sensor on the indoor side. This sensor automatically unlocks the deadbolt when people's hands approach the lock to speed up exits, especially during emergencies.
The Philips 5000 series Smart Deadbolt will be available in the first half of 2024 at an MSRP of $359.99. In the meantime, homeowners who want to better secure their homes without smart locks can install a high-security deadbolt (like this one at Amazon).
