Throwing in the towel after 13 years: Gaming YouTuber with millions of subscribers calls it quits
Even on an international level, 37-year-old Matthew Robert Patrick, as MatPat is known in real life, is one of the absolute heavyweights on the YouTube gaming scene. His channel "The Game Theorists" has around 18.6 million subscribers. Together with his other channels, the YouTuber has a huge fan base of around 40 million followers.
While fans were able to enjoy MatPad's role in the film "Five Nights at Freddy's" at the end of 2023, the video that the million-strong fan base had been expecting for a long time was finally released on January 12, 2024 under the title "Goodby Internet".
In recent months, new hosts have been appearing in videos on MatPad's channels. Will the YouTuber stop altogether or just cut back? Hopes for the latter have been dashed: MatPat has announced his withdrawal from the online world. The last Game Theory episode is scheduled to air on March 9.
Stop while the going’s good
As MatPat himself says, he had the most successful year of his YouTube career in 2023. Since it was always his wish to stop at the peak of his career, now is the right time. The YouTuber also expressed his desire to spend more time with his family. However, he has no shortage of words of thanks for his fans.
The show will go on
Fans need not worry about the YouTube channels coming to an end. The four channels "The Game Theorists", "The Film Theorists", "The Style Theorists" and "The Food Theorists" will be continued by long-standing channel employees.
Even though MatPat is retiring from his active role as a YouTuber, he still wants to be part of the community. While he will no longer regularly appear in front of the camera, MatPat promises to occasionally appear in various projects and be present as an honorary guest. The 37-year-old is also planning other projects: in addition to a lore-fi series, which is due to be released in a few weeks, this also includes his own video game idea.
