YouTube slows down PCs with AdBlock installed (but it's not YouTube's fault)
A surge in performance issues has recently been reported by AdBlock users on YouTube. Contrary to initial suspicions, the problem may not lie within YouTube itself. Over the weekend, discussion on the YouTube subreddit revealed that enabling AdBlock resulted in slower load times and a spike in CPU usage, impacting both regular users and YouTube Premium subscribers who utilize the extension on other sites.
This issue is not entirely new, as The Verge reported a five-second loading delay on other browsers with ad blockers last year. YouTube's ad-blocker detection methods, according to Christopher Lawton, the company's communications manager, are continuously improving, resulting in occasional issues like this. Consequently, YouTube is often blamed for problems relating to these extensions, even when it is not directly responsible.
The blame, in this case, appears to fall on the AdBlock extension itself, and it is possible that other websites are also affected by these performance issues. YouTube has inadvertently found itself at the center of attention due to its immense popularity, making it the platform most impacted by this bug. Additionally, the company has faced criticism in the past for its aggressive measures against ad blockers, which contributes to a lack of benefit of the doubt in these situations.
The HP 2023 Envy 16" WQXGA Touch-Screen Laptop Computer is an excellent choice for watching YouTube videos and using ad blockers. It is currently available on Amazon with a 23% discount, priced at $1,340.
