After Activision-Blizzard discontinued the active development of MOBAS Heroes of the Storm in 2022, modders have brought the game back to life. "Resurgence of the Storm" was programmed into the Starcraft 2 engine and is not only visually appealing, but also features balance adjustments, reworks and even new heroes.

The golden MOBA era took place in the mid-2010s. While player favorites LoL and Dota 2 are still being developed today, small MOBAS were often overshadowed by the hype of the battle royale games. In addition to titles such as Paragon, this also includes Heroes of the Storm, published by Blizzard in 2015, which is particularly notable for its large selection of iconic characters from Warcraft, Starcraft, Overwatch and Diablo.

HotS still has a fan base to this day, but it wasn't enough for Blizzard to continue actively developing the game. In the summer of 2022, Blizzard announced that it would no longer release new content for Heroes of the Stream. However, Blizzard did not take into account a group of modders who are bringing the MOBA back into the race with a new look.

Resurgence of the Storm – HotS mod via the StarCraft 2 engine

Under the title "Resurgence of the Storm" (RotS), the Blizzard MOBA that had disappeared into obscurity has been revived as a playable mod for StarCraft 2. According to the developers themselves, they spent four years programming RotS and it seems to have paid off. Visually, Resurgence of the Storm is almost as good as the original. In addition to reworks and balance adjustments, the mod also promises completely new heroes.

Particularly pleasing for fans of the Blizzard MOBA is the modder's promise to continue developing RotS and keep adding new heroes to the game. However, whether this will actually work depends on funding, so players are actively encouraged to participate.

At launch, 15 characters are playable, including Arthas from Warcraft, the Lord of Terror from Diablo and Artanis from Starcraft. The heroes Muradin, Greymane, Li Ming and Brightwing have also been added. Initially, the game can be played on one of two maps: Cursed Hollow in its unchanged form or Kings Crest, which is a two-lane map in RotS.

Two new heroes

As is revealed right at the start of the game, players can look forward to characters in RotS that never existed in the original game. Two new characters that fans already know from Starcraft are playable at launch: Talandar as a bruiser and Selendis as a melee fighter. The hero "Calf" has also been announced: a ranged fighter who is not from Warcraft, Starcraft or Diablo and is likely to be completely unknown to players.

RotS is free to play

Resurgence of the Storm is free to play via the Starcraft 2 client. However, players must first install some files. This requires the RotS patcher, which is available on the game's official Discord server. Further information can be found in the release notes. One downside is the lack of matchmaking, so the search for teammates has to take place outside the game via Discord.
