Browsers that will be able to shop for and even buy things such as hotel rooms, event tickets or flights all by themselves are on the way, according to Opera. Its Browser Operator is a "native" AI agent that can complete tasks in response to natural-language requests. It is backed to uphold the user's privacy and control at all times.

The Norwegian browser company Opera has come to Barcelona to announced that the latest AI feature for its flagship app might be its most powerful yet.

The Opera Browser Operator looks like many other chat windows in its new preview - however, it is backed to do much more than the average search-oriented bot

Its maker asserts that its AI is agentic and can as such complete tasks in response to prompts in "natural language" from the user.

They apparently include relatively complex multi-step errands such as finding, ordering and even going through online checkouts with products by itself.

The Browser Operator is rated never to leave the "core" of the app to go elsewhere such as a virtual machine or a cloud as with other similarly emerging agentic AIs, thereby preserving the user's privacy (according to Opera, at least).

The user should also be fully in control and be able to veto or cancel tasks at all times. Opera Browser Operator is currently at the Feature Preview stage, and is projected to progress to the company's AI Feature Drop "in the near future".
