The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has tweeted the company's AI large language model roadmap to clarify questions about the current two-prong approach.
AI LLMs are used in chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. Currently, the company allows users to select between models that come up with answers quickly (GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini) and models that can tackle complex tasks by thinking through each step slowly (GPT-o1, GPT-o3 mini). This bifurcation does make it difficult for casual users to select the best AI model to generate the answers they are after.
As an intermediate step between GPT-4o and GPT-5, OpenAI will release GPT-4.5 as their next fast model. The company does not expect to release another non-reasoning model in this series after GPT-4.5.
Their next step will be to combine the ability of their fast models with their reasoning models for the launch of GPT-5. This model will replace GPT-o3 and likely be positioned to also replace GPT-4.5, eliminating the need for users to select a model to use for answering their prompts. At that time, ChatGPT users with free accounts will be allowed to use GPT-5 for free at the standard intelligence level, while paying users will be able to enable higher intelligence levels and features, such as voice input and deep research.
No details about the timing of OpenAI's future LLM releases have been posted. Readers who have no clue about using AI can read this book sold on Amazon to get started on using ChatGPT.
