AI-powered Opera One browser hits the market, features ChatGPT integration with live web results
Norway-based Opera has launched an all-new browser it is calling Opera One. The browser would have been the 100th iteration of Opera, except the company decided to rebuild it from the ground with the latest in generative AI technology integrated into the design. Users have the choice of launching OpenAI’s ChatGPT directly from the sidebar, or use Opera’s new Aria AI interface that blends ChatGPT with live and up-to-date results from the web.
Opera’s Joanna Czajka explains the company’s approach:
As people who obsess over browser innovation, we saw fit to rethink the role of the browser in light of the recent developments in the AI space. As opposed to other browser companies, Opera didn’t simply add AI services to its browser. We went back to the drawing board and redesigned our flagship browser. Opera One is built around Aria, our native browser AI, and is the culmination of our work so far.
In addition to being launched from the sidebar, Aria can also be accessed directly from a command line by using the ctrl+/(Win) or the cmd+/keyboard shortcut to produce an overlay of Aria and instantly interact with it. Users can choose to interact with the AI’s response immediately in the sidebar or carry on browsing. If users choose, they can opt out completely of using either Aria or ChatGPT for a standard browsing experience.
Opera One also introduces a new Tab Islands features for grouping related tabs to better help manage the browsing experience. Another goal of the new feature is to help users jump between tasks more easily. The feature works automatically as well. For example, a user creating a trip itinerary who is researching hotels and journeys will have tabs opened in that context collected in a new Tab Island.
As you would expect for a new browser rebuilt from the ground up, Opera says there are a lot of new under the hood changes that speed up the browsing experience as well. This includes a new browser architecture and a multithreaded compositor all built on the open-source Chromium browser base. Opera One is a free download and is available on Mac, Windows and Linux.
